Psalm 55

1Hear my prayer, God, and do not hide yourself from my supplication.

2Give heed to me and answer me; I mourn in my complaint and groan.

3Because of the foe's shout, because of the wicked's oppression—for they bring evil upon me, and in anger they hate me.

4My heart writhes within me, and death's terrors have fallen upon me.

5Fear and trembling come upon me, and horror overwhelms me.

6I said, "Who would give me wings like a dove? I would fly away and dwell at rest."

7See, I would wander far away and lodge in the wilderness. Selah.

8I would hurry to a refuge from the raging wind and tempest.

9Swallow up, Lord, divide their tongues, for I have seen violence and strife in the city.

10Day and night they circle its walls, wickedness and misery in its midst.

11Mischief is within her; deceit and treachery do not depart from her streets.

12For it was not an enemy defying me—I could have tolerated it; nor one hating me boasting against me—I could have hidden from him.

13But you, a man my equal, my friend and confidant.

14as we shared pleasant counsel together in God's house and walked in the throng.

15Let death seize them unawares; let them descend alive into Sheol, for evils are in their habitations, within them.

16As for me, I will call to God, and Yahweh will save me.

17Evening, morning, and noon I will complain and cry aloud, and he hears my loud voice attentively.

18He redeemed my soul in peace from the battle against me, for many were with me.

19God, who dwells from of old, will hear and answer them. Selah. They have no changes and do not fear God.

20He stretched out his hands against his allies; he profaned his covenant.

21His mouth was smoother than butter, but war was in his heart; his words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords.

22Cast your burden on Yahweh, and he will sustain you; he will never allow the righteous to be shaken.

23But you, God, will bring them down to the pit of destruction; men of blood and deceit will not live out half their days, but I will trust in you.
