Psalm 44

1God, we have heard with our ears what our fathers declared to us, the deeds you performed in their days, in days of old.

2You drove out nations with your hand and planted them; you afflicted peoples and spread them abroad.

3For not by their sword did they possess the land, nor did their arm save them; but your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, because you favored them.

4You yourself are my king, God; command deliverances for Jacob.

5Through you we overthrow our adversaries; through your name we trample those who rise against us.

6For I will not trust in my bow, nor will my sword save me.

7But you have rescued us from our adversaries and disgraced our enemies.

8In God we boast all day, and we will praise your name forever. Selah.

9Yet you have spurned us and disgraced us, and do not go out with our armies.

10You turn us back from the adversary, and those who hate us plunder for themselves.

11You have appointed us like sheep for meat and have dispersed us among the nations.

12You sell your people for no riches, and do not profit from their price.

13You make us a reproach to our neighbors, scorn and derision to those around us.

14You appoint us a byword among the nations, a headshake among the peoples.

15My disgrace is before me all day, and my face is covered with shame.

16From the voice of the taunter and reviler, because of the enemy and the avenger.

17All this has come upon us, yet we have not forgotten you nor dealt deceitfully with your covenant.

18Our heart has not turned backward, nor have our steps turned aside from your path.

19Though you have crushed us in the jackals' haunt and covered us with death's shadow.

20If we have forgotten our God’s name or spread out our hands to a foreign god,

21Wouldn't God investigate this? For he knows the secrets of the heart.

22Yet on account of you we are slain all day; we are reckoned as sheep to be slaughtered.

23Wake up, Lord—why do you sleep? Arise; do not abandon us forever.

24Why do you hide your face and forget our misery and our distress?

25For our soul is humbled to the dust; our belly clings to the earth.

26Arise to help us and redeem us for the sake of your steadfast love.
