Matthew 5

1Seeing the crowds, he went up the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him.

2And having opened his mouth, he taught them, saying.

3The poor in spirit are blessed, because the kingdom of heaven is theirs.

4Blessed are the mourners, for they will be comforted.

5Blessed are the meek, because they will inherit the earth.

6Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.

7Blessed are the merciful, because they will be shown mercy.

8Blessed are the pure in heart, because they will see God.

9Blessed are the peacemakers, because they will be called sons of God.

10Blessed are the persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11Blessed are you when they revile you and persecute you and say every evil against you falsely for my sake.

12Rejoice and exult, because your reward in the heavens is great; for they persecuted the prophets who were before you in the same way.

13You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt becomes tasteless, with what will it be salted? It then avails nothing further except to be thrown out and trampled by people.

14You are the light of the world. A city that lies on a hill cannot be hidden.

15Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a lampstand, and it shines to everyone in the house.

16In this way, let your light shine before people, so that they see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

17Do not suppose that I came to abolish the law or the prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.

18For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will not pass from the law until all things take place.

19Therefore, whoever breaks one of these smallest commandments and teaches others likewise will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

20For I tell you, unless your righteousness abounds more than that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.

21You heard that it was said to the ancients, "You shall not murder"; but whoever murders will be liable to the judgment.

22But I tell you, everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to the judgment; and whoever says to his brother, “Raca,” will be liable to the council; and whoever says, “Fool,” will be liable to the hell of fire.

23Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you,

24Leave your gift there before the altar, go first and be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.

25Be agreeable to your adversary quickly while you are with him on the way, lest the adversary hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the officer, and you be thrown into prison.

26Truly I say to you, by no means will you get out from there until you have paid the last penny.

27You have heard that it was said, "Do not commit adultery."

28But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman to desire her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

29If your right eye makes you stumble, pluck it out and throw it away from you, for it is better for you that one of your members perish than your whole body be cast into hell.

30And if your right hand makes you stumble, cut it off and cast it from you, for it profits you that one of your members perish rather than your whole body go into hell.

31It was said moreover, "Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce."

32But I tell you that whoever divorces his wife, except on account of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

33Again you heard that it was said to the ancients: "You shall not swear falsely, but shall pay to the Lord your oaths."

34But I say to you, do not swear at all; neither by heaven, because it is God's throne.

35neither by the earth, because it is the footstool for his feet; neither by Jerusalem, because it is the city of the great King.

36Nor swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black.

37But let your word be yes, yes; no, no—whatever exceeds these is from the evil one.

38You have heard that it was said, "an eye in place of an eye, and a tooth in place of a tooth."

39But I say to you, do not resist evil; instead, whoever strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other to him also.

40And if anyone wants to take you to court and seize your tunic, let him have your cloak as well.

41And whoever compels you one mile, go with him two.

42Give to the one asking you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

43You heard that it was said, "Love your neighbor and hate your enemy."

44But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those persecuting you.

45so that you become sons of your Father in heaven, for he makes his sun rise on the evil and the good, and rains on the righteous and the unrighteous.

46For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?

47And if you greet only your brothers, what more do you do? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?

48You therefore be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
