Matthew 6

1Be careful not to practice your righteousness before people to be seen by them; otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven.

2Therefore, when you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and streets, so people may honor them. Truly I say to you, they have received their reward.

3But when you give alms, let not your left hand know what your right hand does.

4so that your charity may be in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

5And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, because they love standing to pray in synagogues and at street corners so people see them. Truly I tell you, they have their reward.

6But you, when you pray, enter your private room, and after shutting your door, pray to your Father in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

7But when you pray, do not babble as the Gentiles do, for they think they will be heard for their many words.

8Therefore do not resemble them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

9Pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be sanctified.

10May your kingdom come. May your will be done, as in heaven and on earth.

11Give us our daily bread today.

12And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

13And do not bring us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

14For if you forgive people their offenses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

15But if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your offenses.

16But when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites with their gloomy looks, for they disfigure their faces so people will see them fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.

17But you, when fasting, anoint your head and wash your face.

18so that you do not appear to people as fasting, but to your Father in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

19Do not store up treasures for yourselves on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break through and steal.

20But store up treasures for yourselves in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break through nor steal.

21For where your treasure is, your heart will be there too.

22The eye is the lamp of the body. If therefore your eye is single, your whole body will be bright.

23But if your eye is evil, your whole body will be dark. If therefore the light in you is darkness, how great that darkness!

24No one can serve two masters, because either he will hate one and love the other, or he will hold fast to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and Mammon.

25For this reason I say to you: do not worry about your life—what you will eat—nor about your body—what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body than clothing?

26Look at the birds of the sky: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth far more than they?

27And which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his height?

28And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow—they neither labor nor spin.

29But I tell you that even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these.

30But if God so clothes the grass of the field—which is alive today and cast into the oven tomorrow—will he not much more clothe you, you of little faith?

31So do not worry, saying, "What will we eat? or, What will we drink? or, What will we wear?"

32For the Gentiles seek all these things, for your heavenly Father knows that you need all of them.

33But seek first his kingdom and righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

34So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. The day's trouble is enough for it.
