What does the Bible say about money?
Scripture talks about money constantly, and rarely as a simple evil. The warning is about the heart: what we trust, what we serve, what we cling to. Money is treated as a tool and a test — good when held loosely and given freely, dangerous when it becomes the thing we love.
Key verses
- 1 Timothy 6:10 The love of money — not money itself — is a root of all kinds of evil.
- Matthew 6:24 You cannot serve both God and money.
- Hebrews 13:5 Keep your life free from the love of money; be content, for God will never leave you.
- Proverbs 3:9-10 Honor the Lord with your wealth and the firstfruits of all you produce.
For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. The Bible’s antidote to money’s grip is twofold: contentment and generosity. When God is your security, money loses its power to own you — and an open hand becomes the most natural evidence that your trust rests somewhere higher.
