Matthew 10

1And summoning his twelve disciples, he gave them authority over unclean spirits to cast them out and heal every disease and every sickness.

2Now these are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James son of Zebedee, and John his brother.

3Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew the tax collector, James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus.

4Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, the one who also betrayed him.

5Jesus sent these twelve and commanded them: "Do not go by way of the Gentiles, and do not enter a Samaritan city."

6Go instead to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

7As you go, proclaim that the kingdom of heaven has drawn near.

8Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, drive out demons. You received freely; freely give.

9Do not acquire gold, nor silver, nor brass in your belts.

10Do not take a bag for the journey, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor a staff, for the worker deserves his food.

11And whatever city or village you enter, inquire who in it is worthy, and stay there until you leave.

12And when you enter the house, greet it.

13And if the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it; but if it is not worthy, let your peace turn back to you.

14And whoever does not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet as you leave that house or city.

15Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that city.

16See, I send you as sheep among wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.

17But be on guard against people, for they will hand you over to councils and flog you in their synagogues.

18And you will be led before governors and kings on my account, for a testimony to them and the nations.

19But when they hand you over, do not worry how or what to say, for it will be given to you in that hour what to say.

20For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking in you.

21A brother will betray a brother to death, and a father a child. Children will rise up against parents and put them to death.

22You will be hated by everyone because of my name, but whoever endures to the end will be saved.

23But when they persecute you in this city, flee to another, for truly I say to you, you will not finish the cities of Israel until the Son of Man comes.

24A disciple is not greater than his teacher, nor a servant than his lord.

25It is enough for the disciple to become like his teacher, and the servant like his lord. If they called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more his household!

26Therefore do not fear them, for everything covered will be revealed, and everything hidden will be known.

27What I tell you in the dark, speak in the light; and what you hear in the ear, proclaim from the rooftops.

28And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear the one who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

29Aren’t two sparrows sold for a farthing? Not one of them will fall to the ground without your Father.

30but even the hairs of your head are all numbered.

31Therefore do not fear; you are worth more than many sparrows.

32So whoever confesses me before people, I will also confess him before my Father in heaven.

33But whoever denies me before people, I will also deny him before my Father in heaven.

34Do not suppose that I came to bring peace on the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.

35For I came to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.

36And a man's enemies will be his household members.

37Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

38And whoever does not take his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me.

39Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

40The one who receives you receives me, and the one who receives me receives the one who sent me.

41Whoever welcomes a prophet in a prophet's name will obtain a prophet's reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person in a righteous person's name will obtain a righteous person's reward.

42And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, truly I tell you, he will by no means lose his reward.
