Bible answers
Do pets go to heaven? What does the Bible say?
The Bible does not say whether a particular pet will be in heaven, and anyone who claims to be sure is going beyond Scripture. It does say that God made animals and called them good, that not one sparrow falls without the Father knowing, and that creation itself will be set free and made new. Those truths give real reasons to hope and to trust God’s goodness, even if they do not answer the question you are asking.
Bible verses about pets in heaven
- Genesis 1:24-25God made the animals, each according to its kind, and saw that it was good.
- Proverbs 12:10A righteous person cares for the life of their animal.
- Matthew 10:29Not one sparrow falls to the ground apart from your Father.
- Ecclesiastes 3:21Who knows what happens to the animal’s spirit?
- Isaiah 11:6-9The wolf will stay with the lamb on God’s holy mountain.
- Isaiah 65:25The wolf and the lamb will graze together in the new creation.
- Romans 8:19-21Creation itself will be set free from decay.
- Revelation 21:4-5God will wipe every tear away and make everything new.
The wolf and the lamb will graze together; the lion will eat straw like the ox; and dust will be the serpent’s food. They will not harm or destroy on all my holy mountain, says Yahweh. If you are grieving an animal you loved, that grief is not silly. God made animals, Genesis says he called them good, and Proverbs praises the person who cares for theirs. Jesus says the Father notices a single sparrow. Whatever else is true, God is not careless with what he made.
The Bible is also honest about what it leaves unsaid. Ecclesiastes asks, “Who knows?” about the spirit of animals, and nowhere does Scripture promise that a specific pet will be waiting. What it does promise is a new heaven and a new earth, where creation is set free from decay and Isaiah pictures animals at peace. Christians therefore give different answers. Some hope that God will include the animals we have loved, since he makes all things new. Others say we cannot know. A faithful place to land is this: trust the God who made them, grieve honestly, and leave the question in his hands, knowing he will wipe away every tear.

People also ask
- Do pets go to heaven?
- The Bible does not say. It says God made animals and cares for them (Genesis 1:24-25; Matthew 10:29), and promises a new creation set free from decay (Romans 8:19-21; Isaiah 65:25). Christians hope God will include what he made, but Scripture does not promise that a specific pet will be there.
- Will I see my dog in heaven?
- No verse promises it, and no verse rules it out. Revelation 21:4-5 promises that God will wipe away every tear and make everything new. You can hope, grieve honestly, and trust that God is better than your fears about it.
- Do animals have souls?
- Genesis 2:7 says God breathed life into the man and he became a living being, and the same Hebrew word for “living creature” is used for animals. Ecclesiastes 3:21 asks who knows where the animal’s spirit goes. Scripture treats humans as made in God’s image in a way animals are not, but it does not say animals simply cease to matter to God.
- How do I cope with losing a pet?
- Let yourself grieve; it is real love. Pray honestly, thank God for the years you had, and lean on friends. Writing down memories or holding a small goodbye can help. If grief becomes overwhelming, talk to a pastor or counselor.
