Genesis 1

1At the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

2The earth was formless and empty, darkness over the surface of the deep, and God's Spirit hovering over the surface of the waters.

3God said, "Let light be," and light was.

4God saw that the light was good and separated the light from the darkness.

5God called the light day and called the darkness night. There was evening and there was morning, one day.

6God said, "Let an expanse exist amid the waters, and let it separate waters from waters."

7God made the expanse and separated the waters beneath the expanse from the waters above the expanse, and it was so.

8God called the firmament heaven. It was evening, and it was morning—the second day.

9God said, "Let the waters beneath the sky gather to one place, and let dry land appear," and it was so.

10God called the dry land earth and the gathering of the waters seas. God saw that it was good.

11God said, "Let the earth sprout grass, seed-bearing herbs, and fruit trees producing fruit suited to their kind, whose seed is within them, upon the earth"; and it was so.

12The earth brought forth grass, seed-yielding herbs suited to their kind, and trees producing fruit whose seed was inside them, suited to their kind, and God saw that it was good.

13Evening came, and morning came—the third day.

14God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be for signs, for appointed times, for days, and years."

15Let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to shine upon the earth; and it was so.

16God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, the lesser light to rule the night, and the stars.

17God set them in the firmament of the heavens to shine upon the earth.

18to rule the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. God saw that it was good.

19Evening came, and morning came: the fourth day.

20God said, "Let the waters swarm with swarming living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the face of heaven's expanse."

21God created the great sea monsters and every living creature that creeps, with which the waters swarmed according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. God saw that it was good.

22God blessed them, saying, "Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth."

23Evening came and morning came—the fifth day.

24And God said, "Let the earth produce living creatures according to their kind, livestock, creeping things, and wild beasts of the earth according to their kind"; and it was so.

25God made the living creatures of the earth according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and every creeping thing of the ground according to its kind. God saw that it was good.

26God said, "Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea, the birds of the heavens, the livestock, all the earth, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth."

27God created man in his image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

28God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, subdue it, and rule over the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, and every living thing that moves on the earth."

29God said, "See, I have given you every seed-producing plant across all the earth, and every tree bearing fruit that produces seed; this will be food for you."

30To every living creature of the earth, to every bird of the sky, and to everything that creeps on the earth in which there is a living soul, I have given every green plant for food; and it was so.

31God saw all that he had made, and indeed, it was exceedingly good. It was evening and it was morning, the sixth day.
