Genesis 35

1God said to Jacob, "Rise, go up to Bethel, and settle there; build an altar there to God who appeared to you when you fled from the presence of Esau your brother."

2Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, "Remove the foreign gods that are among you, purify yourselves, and change your garments."

3Let us rise and go up to Bethel, and there I will make an altar to God who answered me in the day of my distress and was with me in the way that I went.

4They gave Jacob all the foreign gods that were in their hands and the earrings that were in their ears, and Jacob hid them under the oak that stood by Shechem.

5They set out, and a terror of God fell upon the cities that surrounded them, and they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob.

6Jacob came to Luz in the land of Canaan, which is Bethel, he and all the people who were with him.

7He built an altar there and called the place El Bethel, because God had appeared to him there when he fled from before his brother.

8Deborah, Rebekah's nurse, died and was buried beneath Bethel under the oak, and he called its name Allon-bachuth.

9God appeared to Jacob again when he came from Padan-aram and blessed him.

10God said to him, "Your name is Jacob; your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel shall be your name." And he named him Israel.

11God said to him, "I am El Shaddai. Be fruitful and increase. A nation and an assembly of nations will arise from you, and kings will come forth from your loins."

12The land that I gave to Abraham and Isaac I will give to you, and to your offspring after you I will give the land.

13God ascended from above him in the place where he spoke with him.

14Jacob erected a pillar in the place where he had spoken with him, a stone pillar. He poured a drink offering over it and oil upon it.

15Jacob called the name of the place where God spoke with him there Bethel.

16They set out from Bethel, and still a short distance remained to reach Ephrath when Rachel gave birth and labored hard in her childbirth.

17And it came to pass, as her labor grew grievous in her giving birth, that the midwife said to her, "Do not fear, for this too is a son for you."

18It happened, as her soul was departing—for she died—that she called his name Ben-oni, but his father called him Benjamin.

19Rachel died and was buried on the road to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem.

20Jacob erected a pillar over her grave; that is the pillar of Rachel's grave to this day.

21Israel journeyed and pitched his tent beyond the tower of Eder.

22Israel was dwelling in that land when Reuben went and slept with Bilhah, his father's concubine, and Israel heard it. Now Jacob's sons were twelve.

23Leah's sons: Reuben, Jacob's firstborn, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun.

24Rachel's sons: Joseph and Benjamin.

25The sons of Bilhah, Rachel's maidservant: Dan and Naphtali.

26The sons of Zilpah, Leah's maidservant: Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob, born to him in Paddan-aram.

27Jacob came to his father Isaac at Mamre, to Kiriath-arba—which is Hebron—where Abraham and Isaac had sojourned.

28Isaac lived to the age of one hundred eighty years.

29Isaac breathed his last and died, and joined his kin as an old man sated with days, and Esau and Jacob his sons buried him.
