Genesis 40

1After these events, the cupbearer of the king of Egypt and the baker sinned against their lord, the king of Egypt.

2Pharaoh grew angry with his two officers, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker.

3He put them under guard in the captain of the guard's house, into the prison—the place in which Joseph was bound.

4The captain of the guard assigned Joseph to them, and he ministered to them; they remained many days in custody.

5Both of them dreamed a dream one night, each his own dream according to the interpretation of his dream—the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt who were bound in the prison house.

6Joseph came to them in the morning, and he saw them—and there they were, dejected.

7He asked Pharaoh's officers who were with him in custody in his master's house, "Why are your faces downcast today?"

8They said to him, "We dreamed a dream, but no interpreter exists for it." Joseph said to them, "Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me, please."

9The chief cupbearer recounted his dream to Joseph and said to him, "In my dream, behold, a vine was before me."

10On the vine were three branches, and as it budded its blossoms rose up while its grape clusters ripened.

11Pharaoh's cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes and pressed them into Pharaoh's cup, and I put the cup into Pharaoh's hand.

12Joseph said to him, "This is its interpretation: the three branches are three days."

13Within three days Pharaoh will lift your head and restore you to your position, and you will give Pharaoh's cup into his hand in the former manner, when you were his cupbearer.

14But if you remember me when it goes well with you, please show me favor, mention me to Pharaoh, and bring me out of this house.

15For indeed I was stolen from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I have done nothing that they should put me into the dungeon.

16The chief baker saw that the interpretation was good and said to Joseph, "I too—in my dream, behold, three white baskets on my head."

17In the highest basket there was every kind of baked good for Pharaoh, and the birds ate them from the basket on my head.

18Joseph answered and said, "Here is its interpretation: the three baskets are three days."

19In three more days Pharaoh will lift your head from off you and hang you on a tree, and the birds will eat your flesh from off you.

20It happened on the third day, Pharaoh's birthday, that he held a banquet for all his servants and lifted up the head of the chief cupbearer and the head of the chief baker among his servants.

21He reinstated the chief cupbearer as Pharaoh's cupbearer again and put the cup in Pharaoh's hand.

22He hanged the chief baker, as Joseph had interpreted to them.

23The chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph but forgot him.
