Genesis 32

1Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.

2When Jacob saw them, he said, "This is God's camp," and he called the name of that place Mahanaim.

3Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to Esau his brother, to the land of Seir, the field of Edom.

4He commanded them, saying, "Thus you shall say to my lord Esau: 'Thus says your servant Jacob: I have sojourned with Laban and remained until now.'"

5I have oxen, donkeys, flocks, servants, and maidservants, and I have sent to inform my lord that I may find favor in your eyes.

6The messengers returned to Jacob, saying, "We reached your brother Esau, and moreover he is coming to meet you, four hundred men with him."

7Jacob was very afraid and distressed, so he divided the people who were with him, along with the flocks, cattle, and camels, into two camps.

8He said, “If Esau comes to one camp and strikes it, then the remaining camp will escape.”

9Jacob said, "God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, Yahweh who said to me, 'Return to your land and to your kin, and I will do well by you,'"

10I am unworthy of all the kindnesses and all the faithfulness that you have shown your servant, for with my staff I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two camps.

11Please rescue me from my brother’s hand, from Esau’s hand, because I fear him, lest he come and strike me, mother with the children.

12You said, "I will surely deal well with you and make your offspring like the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted for its multitude."

13He stayed there that night, and took from what was at hand a gift for Esau his brother.

14Two hundred she-goats and twenty he-goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams.

15Thirty nursing camels and their young, forty cows, ten bulls, twenty female donkeys, and ten colts.

16He gave them into his servants' hands, each herd by itself, and said to his servants, "Pass before me, and leave space between herd and herd."

17He commanded the first, saying, "When Esau my brother meets you and asks you, saying, 'To whom do you belong? Where are you going? To whom do these belong before you?'"

18You shall say, "They belong to your servant Jacob; it is a gift sent to my lord Esau, and look, he too is behind us."

19He commanded also the second, also the third, also all those going after the droves, saying, "Speak to Esau in this manner when you find him."

20You shall say moreover, "Behold, your servant Jacob is behind us." For he said, "I will appease him with the gift going before me, and afterward I will see his face; perhaps he will accept me."

21The offering passed before him, and he spent that night in the camp.

22That night he himself arose and took his two wives, his two maidservants, and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.

23He took them and sent them across the stream, and sent across what he had.

24Jacob remained alone, and a man wrestled with him until the dawn rose.

25When he saw that he could not overcome him, he touched the socket of his thigh, and the socket of Jacob's thigh was dislocated as he wrestled with him.

26He said, "Release me, for dawn has risen." He said, "I will not release you unless you bless me."

27He said to him, “What is your name?” He said, “Jacob.”

28He said, "No longer will your name be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and you have prevailed."

29Jacob asked, "Please tell me your name." He answered, "Why do you ask about my name?" He blessed him there.

30Jacob named the place Peniel, for he said, "I have seen God face to face, and my life was delivered."

31The sun rose upon him as he crossed over Penuel, and he limped on his thigh.

32Therefore the sons of Israel do not eat the sinew that shrank upon the socket of the thigh to this day, because he touched the socket of Jacob's thigh in the sinew that shrank.
