Genesis 22

1Sometime after these events, God tested Abraham and said to him, "Abraham!" He answered, "Here I am."

2He said, "Please take your son, your only son whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah. Offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about."

3Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, took two of his young men and his son Isaac with him, split wood for the burnt offering, arose, and went to the place God had told him about.

4On the third day Abraham raised his eyes and saw the place from afar.

5Abraham said to his young men, "Stay here with the donkey; the boy and I will go over there, worship, and return to you."

6Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac; he took the fire and the knife in his hand, and both went together.

7Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father?” He said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Look, the fire and the wood—but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?”

8Abraham said, "My son, God will provide himself the lamb for a burnt offering." So they both went together.

9They arrived at the place God had spoken of to him. Abraham built the altar there, arranged the wood, bound his son Isaac, and placed him on the altar atop the wood.

10Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son.

11The angel of Yahweh called to him from heaven and said, "Abraham, Abraham!" He said, "Here I am."

12He said, "Do not stretch out your hand to the boy, nor do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me."

13Abraham lifted his eyes and saw—there behind him a ram caught in the thicket by its horns. Abraham went, took the ram, and offered it up as a burnt offering in place of his son.

14Abraham called the name of that place Yahweh Sees, as it is said to this day, "On the mountain of Yahweh it will be seen."

15The angel of Yahweh called to Abraham a second time from heaven.

16He said, “By myself I have sworn,” declares Yahweh, “because you have done this deed and have not spared your son, your only son.”

17I will surely bless you and surely multiply your offspring like the stars of the sky and like the sand on the seashore, and your offspring will possess the gates of their enemies.

18All nations of the earth will bless themselves abundantly in your offspring, because you have carefully heeded my voice.

19Abraham returned to his servants, and they arose and went together to Beersheba. Abraham lived in Beersheba.

20It came about after these matters that Abraham was told, “Look, Milcah—she has also borne sons to your brother Nahor.”

21Uz, his firstborn; Buz, his brother; and Kemuel, father of Aram.

22Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel.

23Bethuel fathered Rebekah. Milcah bore these eight to Nahor, Abraham's brother.

24His concubine, named Reumah, also bore Tebah, Gaham, Thahash, and Maachah.
