Genesis 50

1Joseph fell on his father's face, wept over him, and kissed him.

2Joseph commanded his servants, the physicians, to embalm his father, and the physicians embalmed Israel.

3It took forty days to embalm him, for embalming always takes that long. The Egyptians wept for him seventy days.

4When the days of his mourning had passed, Joseph spoke to Pharaoh's house, saying, "If now I have found favor in your eyes, please speak in the ears of Pharaoh, saying,"

5My father bound me by oath, saying, "See, I am dying. Bury me in the grave I dug for myself in the land of Canaan, there. Now therefore, please let me go up and bury my father, and I will return."

6Pharaoh said, "Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear."

7Joseph went up to bury his father, and Pharaoh's servants went up with him—the elders of his house and all the elders of the land of Egypt.

8All Joseph's household, his brothers, and his father's household—only their children, flocks, and cattle they left in the land of Goshen.

9Both chariots and horsemen went up with him, and the camp was very great.

10They came to the threshing floor of Atad, which lies beyond the Jordan, and there they wailed a very great and grievous lamentation. He held mourning for his father seven days.

11When the Canaanites dwelling in the land saw the mourning at Atad's threshing floor, they said, "This is a grievous mourning by the Egyptians." Therefore its name was called Abel-Mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan.

12His sons did for him as he commanded them.

13His sons carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought from Ephron the Hittite before Mamre—the field—for a possession of a grave.

14Joseph returned to Egypt—he and his brothers and all who went up with him to bury his father—after burying his father.

15Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead, and said, “Perhaps Joseph will hate us and repay us fully for all the evil we did him.”

16They charged Joseph, saying, "Your father commanded before he died, saying,

17Thus say to Joseph, "Please forgive your brothers' transgression and their sin, for they did evil to you; now please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father." Joseph wept as they spoke to him.

18His brothers also approached and bowed before him, and they said, "Here we are, your servants."

19Joseph said to them, “Don't be afraid, for am I in God's place?”

20You planned evil against me, but God planned it for good, to accomplish—as it is this day—keeping a great people alive.

21Now then, do not be afraid. I will sustain you and your children. He comforted them and spoke to their hearts.

22Joseph lived in Egypt—he and his father's household. Joseph lived one hundred ten years.

23Joseph saw Ephraim's children to the third generation, and the children of Machir son of Manasseh were also born on Joseph's knees.

24Joseph said to his brothers, "I am dying, and God will certainly visit you and bring you up from this land to the land he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob."

25Joseph made Israel's sons swear, saying, "God will surely visit you, and you shall carry my bones from here."

26Joseph died at the age of 110 years, and they embalmed him and placed him in a coffin in Egypt.
