Genesis 47

1Joseph came and told Pharaoh, "My father and my brothers, with their flocks and herds and everything they possess, have come from the land of Canaan; look, they are in the land of Goshen."

2He took five men from among his brothers and set them before Pharaoh.

3Pharaoh said to his brothers, "What is your work?" They said to Pharaoh, "Your servants are shepherds of flocks, both we and our fathers."

4They said to Pharaoh, "We have come to dwell in the land, for there is no pasture for your servants' flocks since the famine is severe in the land of Canaan. Now therefore, please let your servants dwell in the land of Goshen."

5Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Your father and your brothers have come to you."

6The land of Egypt is before you. Settle your father and brothers in the choice portion of the land. Have them live in the land of Goshen. If you know capable men exist among them, appoint them rulers over my livestock.

7Joseph brought his father Jacob before Pharaoh and presented him, and Jacob blessed Pharaoh.

8Pharaoh said to Jacob, "How many days are in the years of your life?"

9Jacob said to Pharaoh, "The days of the years of my sojourn number one hundred thirty years; the days of the years of my life have been few and difficult, and have not attained the days of the years of my fathers' lives in the days of their sojourn."

10Jacob blessed Pharaoh and went out from his presence.

11Joseph settled his father and his brothers and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt, in the choice part of the land, in the land of Rameses, as Pharaoh had commanded.

12Joseph sustained his father, his brothers, and all his father's house with food according to their families.

13There was no bread throughout all the land, for the famine was exceedingly harsh, so that the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan grew faint because of the famine.

14Joseph gathered all the money found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan for the grain they were buying, and brought the money into Pharaoh's house.

15When the money ran out in the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Joseph and said, "Give us bread! Why should we die before you? For the money has failed."

16Joseph said, "Bring your livestock, and I will give you food for your livestock if the money is gone."

17They brought their livestock to Joseph, and Joseph gave them bread for the horses, flocks, cattle, and donkeys, and he fed them with bread for all their livestock that year.

18That year came to an end, and the next year they approached him and said, "We will not conceal from our lord that our silver is spent and our livestock—our animals—belong to our lord; nothing remains in our lord's presence but our bodies and our lands."

19Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land? Buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be servants to Pharaoh. Give us seed, that we may live and not die, and that the land not become desolate.

20Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh, for every Egyptian sold his field because the famine overpowered them, and the land became Pharaoh's.

21He relocated the people to the cities from one end of Egypt's border even to its other end.

22But he did not buy the priests' land, for the priests had a portion from Pharaoh, and they ate their portion that Pharaoh gave them; therefore they did not sell their land.

23Joseph said to the people, "See, I have bought you and your land today for Pharaoh. See, here is seed for you, and you shall sow the land.

24At the harvests you will give a fifth to Pharaoh, and four portions will be yours for seed of the field, for your food, for those in your households, and for food for your children.

25They said, "You have kept us alive; let us find favor before my lord, and we will be servants to Pharaoh."

26Joseph appointed it a statute for the land of Egypt until today, for Pharaoh the fifth. Only the land of the priests alone did not become Pharaoh's.

27Israel settled in the land of Egypt, in the land of Goshen, and they acquired possessions there, became fruitful, and multiplied exceedingly.

28Jacob lived seventeen years in the land of Egypt. The days of Jacob, the years of his life, were a hundred forty-seven years.

29As Israel's days drew near to die, he called his son Joseph and said to him, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, please place your hand under my thigh and show kindness and faithfulness toward me; please do not bury me in Egypt.”

30When I lie down with my fathers, carry me from Egypt and bury me in their burial place. He said, I will do according to your word.

31He said, “Swear to me,” and he swore to him. Israel bowed down at the head of the bed.
