Genesis 2

1The heavens and the earth were completed, and all their host.

2God completed his work on the seventh day that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done.

3God blessed the seventh day and consecrated it, because in it he rested from all his work which God created and made.

4These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day Yahweh God made the earth and the heavens.

5No shrub of the field was yet in the earth, and no herb of the field had yet grown, for Yahweh God had not sent rain on the earth, and there was no man to work the ground.

6A mist rose from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground.

7Yahweh God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living soul.

8Yahweh God planted a garden in Eden, eastward, and placed there the man whom he had formed.

9Yahweh God caused every tree to sprout from the ground—trees desirable in appearance and good for food, the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

10A river flowed from Eden to irrigate the garden, and from there it divided and became four heads.

11The name of the first is Pishon: it encircles the whole land of Havilah, where gold is.

12That land's gold is good; bdellium and onyx stone are there.

13The name of the second river is Gihon; it surrounds the whole land of Cush.

14The name of the third river is Hiddekel; it flows east of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates.

15Yahweh God took the man and placed him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.

16Yahweh God commanded the man, saying, "You may freely eat from every tree of the garden."

17But from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat from it, for in the day you eat from it you shall surely die.

18Yahweh God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him."

19Yahweh God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the sky from the ground, brought them to the man to see what he would name them, and whatever the man named every living creature, that was its name.

20The man named all the livestock, the birds of the sky, and all the animals of the field, but a helper corresponding to him was not found for the man.

21Yahweh God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; he took one of his ribs and closed the flesh in its place.

22Yahweh God fashioned the rib that he had taken from the man into a woman and brought her to the man.

23The man said, "This at last—bone from my bones, flesh from my flesh; this one will be called woman, because she was taken from man."

24For this reason a man forsakes his father and his mother, clings to his wife, and they become one flesh.

25Both the man and his wife were naked, and they were not ashamed.
