John 1

1In the beginning the Word existed, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2He was in the beginning with God.

3All things came into being through him, and without him nothing came into being—not even one thing that has come into being.

4Life was in him, and the life was the light of humanity.

5And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.

6A man sent from God appeared, named John.

7He came for testimony, that he might testify about the light, that all might believe through him.

8He was not the light, but so that he might testify about the light.

9It was the true light that enlightens every person coming into the world.

10He was in the world, and the world came into being through him, yet the world did not know him.

11He came to his own, and his own did not receive him.

12But all who received him, to them he gave the right to become children of God, those who believe in his name.

13who were born not by blood, nor by the flesh's desire, nor by man's desire, but by God.

14And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we looked upon his glory, a glory like that of the only one from the Father, full of grace and truth.

15John testifies about him and has cried out, saying, "This was the one of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has become before me, because he was before me.'"

16For from his fullness we all have received grace for grace.

17For the law was given through Moses, and grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

18No one has ever seen God. The only God, who is in the Father's bosom, has made him known.

19And this is John's testimony, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?"

20He confessed and did not deny but confessed, "I am not the Christ."

21And they questioned him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" He replied, "I am not." "Are you the prophet?" And he answered, "No."

22Therefore they said to him, “Who are you, that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?”

23He said, "I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, 'Make the Lord's way straight,' as Isaiah the prophet said."

24And those who had been sent were from the Pharisees.

25And they asked him and said to him, "Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?"

26John answered them, "I baptize in water; one stands among you whom you do not know."

27The one who comes after me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loosen.

28These things took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

29The following day he saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world."

30This is the one about whom I said, "After me comes a man who has become before me, because he was before me."

31And I did not know him, but for this reason I came baptizing in water: so that he might be revealed to Israel.

32And John testified, saying, "I have seen the Spirit descending like a dove from heaven, and it remained on him."

33I did not know him either, but the one who sent me to baptize in water said to me, “Whoever you see the Spirit descend upon and remain on, this is the one who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.”

34And I have seen and have testified that this is the chosen one of God.

35Again the following day, John was standing with two of his disciples.

36And gazing at Jesus as he walked, he said, "Behold, the Lamb of God!"

37And his two disciples heard him speaking and followed Jesus.

38Jesus turned and saw them following, and said to them, "What are you seeking?" They said to him, "Rabbi (which is translated Teacher), where are you staying?"

39He said to them, "Come, and you will see." They came therefore and saw where he was staying, and remained with him that day. The hour was about the tenth.

40Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two who heard from John and followed him.

41He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, "We have found the Messiah—which is translated Christ."

42He brought him to Jesus. Looking at him, Jesus said, "You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas (which is interpreted Peter)."

43The following day, he decided to go out into Galilee, found Philip, and Jesus said to him, "Follow me."

44Now Philip was from Bethsaida, Andrew and Peter's city.

45Philip found Nathanael and said to him, "We have found him whom Moses wrote about in the law and the prophets: Jesus, son of Joseph from Nazareth."

46And Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come from Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see."

47Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and says of him, "See, a true Israelite, in whom there is no deceit."

48Nathanael said to him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered and said to him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you."

49Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are king of Israel."

50Jesus answered him, "Because I told you I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these."

51And he said to him, “Amen, amen, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and God’s angels ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
