John 6

1After these things Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, the Sea of Tiberias.

2And a large crowd followed him because they saw the signs he performed on the sick.

3Jesus went up the mountain and sat there with his disciples.

4Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was near.

5Jesus therefore raised his eyes and saw that a great crowd was coming to him, and said to Philip, "Where shall we buy bread so these may eat?"

6But he said this to try him, for he himself knew what he was about to do.

7Philip answered him, "Two hundred denarii worth of bread does not suffice for them, that each might receive a little."

8Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, one of his disciples, said to him,

9Here is a boy who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are these among so many?

10Jesus said, "Have the people sit down." Much grass was in that place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number.

11Then Jesus took the loaves, and having given thanks, distributed them to those seated; likewise also from the fish, as much as they wanted.

12After they were satisfied, he said to his disciples, "Gather the leftover fragments so that nothing is lost."

13So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves that were more than enough for those who had eaten.

14Therefore, when the people saw the sign he performed, they said, "This is truly the prophet who comes into the world."

15Jesus therefore realized that they were about to come seize him to make him king, and withdrew again to the mountain by himself alone.

16As evening came, his disciples went down to the sea.

17They boarded the boat and set out across the sea toward Capernaum. Darkness had already come, and Jesus had not yet arrived to them.

18And the sea was rising, a great wind blowing.

19Therefore, when they had rowed about twenty-five or thirty stadia, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near to the boat, and they were afraid.

20But he said to them, "I am he. Do not be afraid."

21So they wanted to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat arrived at the land where they were heading.

22The next day the crowd standing on the other side of the sea saw that no other boat was there except one, and that Jesus had not gone into the boat with his disciples, but his disciples had departed alone.

23But boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.

24When the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves boarded the small boats and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.

25And when they found him beyond the sea, they said to him, "Rabbi, when did you get here?"

26Jesus answered them and said, "Truly, truly, I tell you, you seek me not because you saw signs, but because you ate from the loaves and were satisfied."

27Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that remains for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you, for God the Father has sealed him.

28So they asked him, “What should we do to perform the works of God?”

29Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in the one whom he sent.”

30They said therefore to him, "What sign do you do, then, that we may see and believe you? What work do you do?"

31Our fathers ate manna in the wilderness, as it is written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.

32So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I tell you, Moses did not give you bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven.”

33For the bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.

34So they said to him, "Lord, always give us this bread."

35Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. The one who comes to me will never hunger, and the one who believes in me will never thirst."

36But I said to you that even though you have seen me, you do not believe.

37Everyone whom the Father gives me will come to me, and the one who comes to me I will never cast out.

38Because I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me.

39This is the will of the one who sent me, that I lose none of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day.

40For this is my Father's will, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.

41So the Jews grumbled about him because he said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven."

42And they said, "Isn't this Jesus, Joseph's son, whose father and mother we know? How does he now say that he has come down from heaven?"

43Jesus answered them and said, "Do not murmur among yourselves."

44No one can come to me if the Father who sent me does not draw him, and I will raise him on the last day.

45It is written in the prophets: "All will be taught by God." Everyone who has heard from the Father and learned comes to me.

46No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father.

47Truly, truly, I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life.

48I am the bread of life.

49Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness and died.

50This is the bread coming down from heaven, so anyone may eat of it and not die.

51I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever, and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.

52The Jews therefore argued with one another, saying, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?"

53Jesus therefore said to them, "Truly, truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life within yourselves."

54The one who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.

55For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.

56The one who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him.

57As the living Father sent me, and I live through the Father, so the one who eats me—he too will live through me.

58This is the bread that came down from heaven—not as the fathers ate and died. Whoever eats this bread will live forever.

59He said these things while teaching in the Capernaum synagogue.

60Therefore many of his disciples, when they heard, said, "This word is hard—who can hear it?"

61But Jesus, knowing within himself that his disciples were murmuring about this, said to them, “Does this cause you to stumble?”

62Then what if you see the Son of Man ascending where he was before?

63It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

64But there are some among you who do not believe. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they are who do not believe, and who it is who would betray him.

65And he said, “This is why I have said to you that no one can come to me unless it has been given to him from the Father.”

66After this many of his disciples went back and no longer walked with him.

67Jesus therefore said to the twelve, "You do not also want to go away, do you?"

68Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life."

69And we have believed and come to know that you are the Holy One of God.

70Jesus answered them, "Didn't I choose you twelve, and one of you is a devil?"

71Now he referred to Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, for this one was about to betray him, one of the twelve.
