John 12

1Six days before Passover, Jesus came to Bethany where Lazarus, whom he raised from the dead, was.

2So they prepared a supper for him there, and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those reclining with him.

3Mary therefore took a pound of pure nard ointment, very precious, anointed Jesus' feet, and wiped his feet with her hair, and the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment.

4But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples who was about to betray him, said,

5Why wasn't this ointment sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?

6He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having the moneybag, he used to take whatever was put into it.

7Then Jesus said, "Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my burial."

8For you always have the poor with yourselves, but you do not always have me.

9Therefore a large crowd from the Jews learned he was there, and they came—not for Jesus only, but to see Lazarus also, whom he raised from the dead.

10But the chief priests plotted to kill Lazarus also.

11Because many of the Jews were going away because of him and believing in Jesus.

12The next day a large crowd that had come to the festival heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem.

13They took palm branches and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!”

14Jesus, having found a young donkey, sat upon it, as it stands written.

15Do not fear, daughter of Zion. Behold, your king comes, seated on a donkey's colt.

16His disciples did not know these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these had been written about him, and that they had done these things to him.

17Therefore the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead was bearing witness.

18For this reason the crowd also went out to meet him, because they heard that he had done this sign.

19The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, "See that you profit nothing. Look, the world has gone after him."

20Now certain Greeks were among those going up to worship at the feast.

21These then came to Philip from Bethsaida of Galilee and asked him, saying, "Lord, we want to see Jesus."

22Philip came and told Andrew; then Andrew came with Philip, and they told Jesus.

23Jesus answered them, saying, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified."

24Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone by itself. But if it dies, it bears much fruit.

25The one who loves his life loses it, and the one who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.

26Whoever serves me must follow me; and wherever I am, my servant will be there too. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor him.

27My soul is now troubled, and what am I to say? Father, rescue me from this hour, but for this I came to this hour.

28Father, glorify your name. Then a voice came from heaven: I have glorified it and will glorify it again.

29Therefore the crowd standing nearby and hearing it said that thunder had sounded; others said, "An angel has spoken to him."

30Jesus answered, "This voice has not come for my sake, but for yours."

31Now is the judgment of this world. Now the ruler of this world will be cast out.

32And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all to myself.

33But he said this, signifying by what kind of death he was about to die.

34So the crowd answered him, “We heard from the law that the Messiah remains forever. How do you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?”

35Jesus therefore said to them, "The light is still with you a little longer. Walk while you have the light, so darkness does not overtake you; and whoever walks in the darkness does not know where he is going."

36While you have light, believe in the light, so you may become sons of light. Jesus said these things, departed, and hid himself from them.

37He had done so many signs before them, but they did not believe in him.

38so that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke: "Lord, who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?"

39Because of this they could not believe, because Isaiah said again.

40He has blinded their eyes and hardened their heart, lest they see with their eyes and understand with their heart and turn, and I heal them.

41Isaiah said these things when he saw his glory and spoke concerning him.

42Nevertheless, even many among the rulers believed in him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they be expelled from the synagogue.

43For they loved the glory of men more than God's glory.

44Jesus cried out and said, "Whoever believes in me does not believe in me, but in the one who sent me."

45And whoever beholds me beholds the one who sent me.

46I have come into the world as light, so that everyone who believes in me may not remain in the darkness.

47And if anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I do not judge him, for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world.

48The one who rejects me and does not accept my sayings has one judging him: the word that I spoke—that one will judge him on the last day.

49Because I did not speak from myself, but the Father who sent me has given me a commandment—what I should say and what I should speak.

50And I know that his commandment is eternal life. Therefore whatever I speak, as the Father has said to me, so I speak.
