John 13

1Before the Passover feast, Jesus knew that his hour had come for him to depart from this world to the Father, and having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

2And during supper, the devil had already thrown into the heart of Judas, Simon's son Iscariot, that he betray him.

3Knowing that the Father had given everything into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God,

4He got up from supper, set aside his clothes, took a towel, and wrapped it around himself.

5Then he poured water into the basin and began washing the disciples' feet and wiping them with the towel with which he was girded.

6Then he came to Simon Peter. Peter said to him, “Lord, are you washing my feet?”

7Jesus answered and said to him, "What I am doing, you do not know now, but after this you will know."

8Peter said to him, “Never will you wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “Unless I wash you, you have no share with me.”

9Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head."

10Jesus said to him, "Whoever has bathed has no need except to wash his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not all."

11Because he knew the one betraying him, for that reason he said, "Not all of you are clean."

12When he had washed their feet, taken his clothes, and reclined again, he said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you?"

13You call me Teacher and Lord, and you do well to say so, for so I am.

14If I, the Lord and Teacher, washed your feet, you too ought to wash one another's feet.

15For I gave you an example, so that just as I did to you, you also should do.

16Truly, truly, I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is an apostle greater than the one who sent him.

17If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.

18I am not referring to all of you. I know the ones I have chosen. But this is so the Scripture may be fulfilled: "The one who eats my bread has lifted his heel against me."

19From this moment I tell you before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe that I am he.

20Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.

21After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in spirit, bore witness, and said, "Amen, amen, I tell you that one of you will betray me."

22The disciples were looking at each other, at a loss about whom he was speaking.

23One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining on Jesus' bosom.

24Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him to ask who it might be about whom he speaks.

25So he leaned back on Jesus' breast and said to him, "Lord, who is it?"

26Jesus answered, "He is the one to whom I will dip the morsel and give it." Then, having dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, son of Simon Iscariot.

27And after the morsel, then Satan entered him. Jesus therefore said to him, "What you do, do quickly."

28But none of those reclining knew why he said this to him.

29For some thought, because Judas had the moneybag, that Jesus said to him, "Buy what we need for the feast," or that he should give something to the poor.

30So he took the sop and went out at once. And it was night.

31So when he went out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him."

32If God has been glorified in him, God will glorify him in himself, and will glorify him immediately.

33Little children, I am with you a little longer. You will seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, "Where I am going, you cannot come," so now I tell you.

34I give you a new commandment, that you love one another as I loved you, so that you also love one another.

35All will know by this that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.

36Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus answered, "Where I go, you cannot follow me now, but you will follow afterward."

37Peter said to him, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you."

38Jesus answered, "Will you lay down your soul for me? Amen, amen, I tell you, the rooster will not crow until you deny me three times."
