John 11

1Now there was a certain man who was sick, Lazarus from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.

2Now Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.

3Therefore the sisters sent to him, saying, “Lord, behold, the one you love is sick.”

4But when Jesus heard, he said, "This sickness is not for death but for God's glory, so the Son of God may be glorified through it."

5But Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.

6So when he heard that he was sick, then he remained two days in the place where he was.

7Then after this he said to the disciples, "Let us go into Judea again."

8The disciples say to him, "Rabbi, the Jews just now sought to stone you, and do you go there again?"

9Jesus answered, "Does the day not have twelve hours? If anyone walks during the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world."

10But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.

11He said these things, and after this he said to them, "Lazarus our friend has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may wake him."

12So the disciples said to him, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover."

13Jesus had spoken about his death, but those thought that he was speaking about falling asleep.

14Then Jesus said frankly to them, "Lazarus died."

15And I rejoice because of you that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.

16Thomas, called Didymus, therefore said to his fellow disciples, "Let us go too, that we may die with him."

17So when Jesus arrived, he found him already four days in the tomb.

18Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia away.

19Many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them concerning their brother.

20So Martha, when she heard that Jesus was coming, met him, but Mary was sitting in the house.

21Martha therefore said to Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died."

22But even now I know that whatever you ask God, God will give you.

23Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise."

24Martha said to him, "I know that he will rise in the resurrection on the last day."

25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me will live, even if he dies.”

26And everyone who lives and believes in me will never die forever. Do you believe this?

27She said to him, "Yes, Lord. I have believed that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one coming into the world."

28After saying this, she left and called Mary, her sister, secretly, saying, "The Teacher is here and calls you."

29As soon as she heard, she got up quickly and went to him.

30Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha met him.

31Then the Jews who were with her in the house, comforting her, saw Mary rise quickly and go out, followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to weep there.

32Therefore, when Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”

33Therefore, when Jesus saw her weeping and the Jews who had come with her weeping, he groaned in his spirit and troubled himself.

34He said, "Where have you placed him?" They said to him, "Lord, come and see."

35Jesus shed tears.

36The Jews therefore said, "See how he loved him!"

37But some of them said, "Could this man who opened the eyes of the blind not have made it so that this man also did not die?"

38Jesus therefore, deeply troubled again within himself, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay on it.

39Jesus said, "Take the stone away." Martha, the sister of the one who had died, said to him, "Lord, he already stinks, for he is four days dead."

40Jesus said to her, "Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see God's glory?"

41So they removed the stone. Jesus raised his eyes upward and said, "Father, I thank you because you heard me."

42I know that you always hear me, but because of the crowd standing around I said this, so that they may believe that you sent me.

43And having said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!"

44The dead man came out, his feet and hands bound with linen wrappings, his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Untie him, and let him go."

45Therefore many of the Jews who had come to Mary and seen what he did believed in him.

46But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.

47Therefore the chief priests and the Pharisees assembled the council and said, “What are we doing? For this man performs many signs.”

48If we let him go on like this, all will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and nation.

49But a certain one of them, Caiaphas the high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing."

50Nor do you reckon that it profits you for one man to die for the people, and the whole nation not perish.

51He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus was about to die for the nation.

52And not only for the nation, but that he might also gather into one the children of God who were dispersed.

53So from that day they plotted to kill him.

54Jesus therefore no longer went about publicly among the Jews, but withdrew from there into the countryside near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim, and stayed there with his disciples.

55Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up from the countryside to Jerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves.

56So they were looking for Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the temple, "What do you think—that he will not come to the feast at all?"

57Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given commandments that if anyone knew where he is, he should inform them, so they might arrest him.
