Bible answers
What does the Bible say about grief?
The Bible does not rush grief. It gives us an entire book of laments, a Savior who wept at a friend’s grave, and a God who is described as especially close to those whose hearts are broken. Sorrow is not treated as a lack of faith but as something God draws near to.
Key verses
- Psalm 34:18 The Lord is near to the broken-hearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
- Matthew 5:4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
- Revelation 21:4 God will wipe away every tear; death and mourning will be no more.
- 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 The God of all comfort comforts us so we can comfort others.
The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. Scripture holds two things at once: real, unhurried sorrow, and a hope that death does not get the last word. It never asks you to pretend you aren’t grieving — only to grieve in the company of a God who is near, and who promises a day with no more tears.
