What does the Bible say about fear?
The phrase "do not be afraid" runs from Genesis to Revelation. Scripture takes fear seriously, but it almost never leaves the command alone — it attaches a reason: God is with you. Courage in the Bible is rarely the absence of fear; it is fear answered by a Presence.
Key verses
- Isaiah 41:10 Do not fear, for God is with you; he will strengthen, help, and uphold you.
- 2 Timothy 1:7 God gave a spirit not of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.
- Psalm 34:4 When sought, the Lord answered and delivered from every fear.
- Joshua 1:9 Be strong and courageous; the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.
Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. Notice what Scripture does not say — it does not promise the frightening thing will vanish. It promises company in it: "I am with thee." The antidote to fear, again and again, is not certainty about the outcome but the nearness of God.
