John 4

1When Jesus therefore realized that the Pharisees had heard Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John

2Although Jesus himself did not baptize, but his disciples.

3He left Judea and set out again for Galilee.

4And he had to go through Samaria.

5So he came to a city of Samaria named Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave his son Joseph.

6Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, weary from the journey, sat thus by the well. The hour was about the sixth.

7A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give me a drink."

8For his disciples had gone into the city to buy food.

9The Samaritan woman therefore said to him, "How can you, being a Jew, ask me for a drink since I am a Samaritan woman? For Jews do not associate with Samaritans."

10Jesus answered and said to her, "If you knew God's gift and who he is—the one saying to you, 'Give me a drink'—you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water."

11The woman said to him, “Sir, you don't even have a bucket, and the well is deep—from where, then, do you have that living water?”

12Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, and his sons and livestock?

13Jesus answered her and said, "Everyone who drinks from this water will thirst again."

14But whoever drinks from the water I will give him will never thirst forever; rather, the water I will give him will become in him a spring of water springing up to eternal life.

15The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water, so that I do not thirst nor come here to draw."

16He said to her, "Go, call your husband, and come here."

17The woman answered and told him, "I have no husband." Jesus told her, "You spoke well in saying, 'I have no husband.'"

18For you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband—this you have said truly.

19The woman said to him, "Sir, I see that you are a prophet."

20Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem.

21Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father."

22You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, because salvation is from the Jews.

23But the hour is coming, and it is already here, when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such people who worship him.

24God is spirit, and those worshiping him must worship in spirit and truth.

25The woman said to him, "I know that Messiah comes—the one called Christ; when he comes, that one will tell us everything."

26Jesus said to her, "I am the one speaking to you."

27Just then his disciples arrived, and they were amazed that he was speaking with a woman; yet no one said, "What are you seeking?" or, "Why are you speaking with her?"

28So the woman left her water jar and went into the city, and said to the men,

29Come, see a man who told me all that I did. Can this be the Christ?

30They went out of the city and were coming toward him.

31Meanwhile, the disciples were entreating him, saying, "Rabbi, eat."

32But he said to them, "I have food to eat that you do not know."

33So the disciples said to one another, "Has anyone brought him anything to eat?"

34Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of the one who sent me and to complete his work."

35Do you not say, "There are still four months, and then the harvest comes"? See, I tell you: lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest.

36The reaper receives a reward and gathers fruit for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may rejoice together.

37For in this the saying is true: one sows, and another reaps.

38I sent you to reap what you have not labored for; others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.

39Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the statement of the woman who testified, "He told me all that I did."

40So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to remain with them, and he remained there two days.

41And many more believed through his word.

42And they said to the woman, "We now believe, not because of your speech; for we ourselves have heard and know that this is truly the Savior of the world."

43After the two days he departed from there into Galilee.

44For Jesus himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.

45So when he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, having seen all that he did in Jerusalem at the feast—for they too had come to the feast.

46He came again to Cana in Galilee, where he turned the water into wine. A certain royal official was there whose son lay sick at Capernaum.

47When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea into Galilee, he went to him and kept asking him to come down and heal his son, for he was about to die.

48So Jesus said to him, “Unless you see signs and wonders, you will never believe.”

49The nobleman said to him, "Lord, come down before my child dies."

50Jesus said to him, “Go. Your son lives.” The man believed the word that Jesus said to him, and he went.

51As he was already coming down, his servants met him, saying that his child lives.

52He asked them the hour when he began to get better. So they said to him, "Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him."

53So the father knew that it was at that very hour when Jesus told him, "Your son lives." He himself believed, and his whole household too.

54This was again the second sign that Jesus performed after coming from Judea into Galilee.
