John 20

1On the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw the stone taken away from the tomb.

2So she ran and came to Simon Peter and the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They took the Lord away from the tomb, and we do not know where they put him."

3Therefore Peter and the other disciple went out to the tomb.

4Both ran together, but the other disciple outran Peter more quickly and reached the tomb first.

5And stooping down, he saw the linen cloths lying, yet he did not enter.

6Then Simon Peter came following him, entered the tomb, and saw the linen cloths lying.

7And the cloth that had been on his head was not lying with the linen cloths but rolled up by itself in one place.

8So then the other disciple also entered, the one who had come first to the tomb, and he saw and believed.

9For they had not yet known the scripture that he needed to rise from the dead.

10So the disciples left again for their own homes.

11But Mary stood weeping outside beside the tomb, so as she wept she stooped to peer into the tomb.

12And she beheld two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet where the body of Jesus had lain.

13And those said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She said to them, "Because they carried off my Lord, and I do not know where they placed him."

14Having said these things, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but did not know that it was Jesus.

15Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?" Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, "Sir, if you carried him away, tell me where you put him, and I will take him away."

16Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Hebrew, “Rabboni!” which means “Teacher!”

17Jesus said to her, "Do not cling to me, for I have not yet gone up to the Father; go to my brothers and tell them, 'I am going up to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'"

18Mary Magdalene came and announced to the disciples that she had seen the Lord and that he had said these things to her.

19Therefore, when evening came on that day—the first day of the week—and the doors were locked where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace to you.”

20And after saying this, he showed them his hands and his side. Therefore the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.

21Jesus therefore said to them again, "Peace to you. As the Father has sent me, I too send you."

22And having said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit."

23Anyone whose sins you forgive, they have been forgiven them; anyone whose sins you retain, they have been retained.

24But Thomas, one of the twelve called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.

25The other disciples therefore said to him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger into the mark of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe."

26And eight days later his disciples were gathered inside again, with Thomas among them; Jesus came, the doors being locked, stood in their midst, and said, “Peace to you.”

27Then he said to Thomas, "Bring your finger here and see my hands, bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believing."

28Thomas answered and said to him, "My Lord and my God!"

29Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen me, have you believed? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.”

30Then indeed Jesus also performed many other signs before his disciples, which are not written in this book.

31But these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and so that, believing, you may have life in his name.
