Luke 24

1But on the first day of the week, at very early dawn, they came to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared.

2But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb.

3They entered but did not find the body.

4And it happened while they were at a loss about this, behold, two men stood beside them in flashing clothing.

5When they became terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, they said to them, "Why do you seek the living among the dead?"

6He is not here, but has been raised. Remember how he spoke to you while he was still in Galilee.

7saying that the Son of Man must be handed over into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and rise on the third day.

8Then they remembered his words.

9They returned from the tomb and reported all these things to the eleven and all the rest.

10Now Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary mother of James, and the other women with them were telling these things to the apostles.

11And these words seemed like nonsense to them, and they disbelieved them.

12But Peter arose and ran to the tomb. Stooping down, he saw the linen cloths by themselves, and he departed to his own home, marveling at what had occurred.

13And look, two of them were traveling that day to a village called Emmaus, which was sixty stadia from Jerusalem.

14They talked with one another about all these things that had happened.

15And while they were talking and questioning, Jesus himself approached and went with them.

16But their eyes were restrained from recognizing him.

17He said to them, "What words are these that you exchange with one another as you walk?" They stood, downcast.

18One named Cleopas answered him, "Do you alone live as a stranger in Jerusalem and not know the things that happened there in these days?"

19He said to them, "What things?" They said to him, "The things about Jesus the Nazarene, who was a man, a prophet powerful in deed and word in the sight of God and all the people."

20how both the chief priests and our rulers handed him over to a sentence of death and crucified him.

21But we were hoping that he was the one who would redeem Israel; yes, and alongside all these things, today is the third day since they happened.

22But certain women from among us also astounded us, having arrived at the tomb at dawn.

23And not finding his body, they came saying they had also seen a vision of angels who said he lives.

24Certain ones with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see him.

25Then he said to them, "O senseless ones, slow of heart to trust everything the prophets spoke!"

26Was it not necessary for Christ to suffer these things and enter his glory?

27And beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, he interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things about himself.

28They approached the village where they were going, and he made as if to go farther.

29They constrained him, saying, "Stay with us, because evening draws near and the day has already declined." And he entered to stay with them.

30And it happened, when he had sat down with them, that he took the bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to them.

31Then their eyes opened, and they recognized him, and he vanished from their sight.

32And they said to each other, "Wasn't our heart burning within us as he spoke to us on the road, as he opened the scriptures to us?"

33They rose up that hour itself, returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven and those with them gathered.

34saying, "The Lord has truly been raised and appeared to Simon."

35They recounted the events on the road and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.

36While they were saying these things, he himself stood among them.

37But they were startled and terrified, supposing they were seeing a spirit.

38And he said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts?"

39See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see me having.

40And after saying this, he showed them his hands and his feet.

41While they still disbelieved because of joy and marveled, he said to them, "Do you have anything to eat here?"

42And they gave him a piece of broiled fish.

43And he took it in their presence and ate.

44He said to them, "These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you: everything written in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms about me must be fulfilled."

45Then he opened their mind to understand the Scriptures.

46And he said to them, “This is how it has been written for the Christ to suffer and rise from the dead on the third day.”

47and repentance and forgiveness of sins be proclaimed in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

48You are witnesses of these things.

49And look, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you, but you stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.

50He led them out to Bethany, and raising his hands, he blessed them.

51And while he was blessing them, he departed from them and was taken up into heaven.

52And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy.

53And they were continually in the temple, blessing God.
