Luke 4

1Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness.

2for forty days being tempted by the devil. And in those days he ate nothing, and when they were completed, he was hungry.

3The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.”

4And Jesus answered him, "It is written that man shall not live on bread alone."

5And he led him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.

6And the devil said to him, "I will give you all this authority and their glory, because it has been handed over to me, and to whomever I wish I give it."

7Therefore, if you worship before me, all will be yours.

8And Jesus answered him, “It is written: ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve him alone.’”

9He led him to Jerusalem, set him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, cast yourself down from here."

10For it is written, "He will command his angels concerning you to guard you."

11and that they will bear you up on their hands, lest you strike your foot against a stone.

12And Jesus answered him, "It is said, 'You shall not tempt the Lord your God.'"

13And when the devil had finished every temptation, he withdrew from him until an opportune time.

14Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the entire surrounding region.

15He taught in their synagogues, glorified by all.

16And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and entered the synagogue on the Sabbath day as was his custom, and stood up to read.

17And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him, and unrolling the scroll, he found the place where it was written.

18The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to free the oppressed.

19to proclaim the Lord's acceptable year.

20He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were gazing intently at him.

21And he began to say to them, "Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing."

22All bore witness to him and marveled at the words of grace coming from his mouth, and they said, “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?”

23And he said to them, "Surely you will quote this parable to me: 'Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we heard done in Capernaum, do that here too in your hometown.'"

24He said, "Truly I tell you, no prophet is welcome in his hometown."

25But truly I say to you, many widows were in Israel in Elijah's days when heaven was shut for three years and six months, when great famine came upon all the land.

26But Elijah was sent to none of them except to Zarephath of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.

27And many lepers were in Israel during Elisha the prophet, but none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.

28And all in the synagogue were filled with wrath hearing these things.

29They rose up, drove him out of the city, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, to hurl him down the cliff.

30But he passed through their midst and went on his way.

31And he came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbaths.

32And they were astonished at his teaching, because his word was with authority.

33And in the synagogue was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice.

34Ha! What have we to do with you, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God.

35Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet and come out of him!" Then the demon threw him into the midst and came out from him without harming him.

36Astonishment came upon everyone, and they spoke with one another, saying, "What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out."

37And his fame spread into every place of the surrounding region.

38He rose from the synagogue and entered Simon's house. Simon's mother-in-law was gripped by a severe fever, and they appealed to him for her.

39And standing over her, he rebuked the fever, and it left her; immediately she arose and served them.

40As the sun was setting, all who had sick people with various diseases brought them to him; he laid his hands on each one of them and healed them.

41Demons also departed from many, shouting and declaring, "You are God's Son!" Rebuking them, however, he refused to let them speak, because they knew he was Christ.

42When day came, he departed and went to a desolate place, but the crowds were seeking him, came to him, and held him back to keep him from leaving them.

43But he said to them, "I must also bring good news of God's kingdom to other cities, for I was sent for this purpose."

44And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.
