Luke 20

1And on one of those days, while he was teaching the people in the temple and announcing good news, the chief priests and scribes came up to him with the elders.

2And they said to him, "Tell us by what authority you do these things, or who is the one who gave you this authority?"

3He answered them, "I too will ask you one question; tell me."

4Was John's baptism from heaven or from men?

5But they reasoned among themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will say, 'Why did you not believe him?'"

6But if we say, "From men," all the people will stone us, for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.

7And they answered that they did not know where it came from.

8And Jesus said to them, "Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things."

9He began to tell the people this parable: A certain man planted a vineyard, leased it to tenant farmers, and went abroad for a considerable time.

10At the season he sent a servant to the farmers so they would give him fruit from the vineyard, but the farmers beat him and sent him away empty.

11He sent another servant, but they beat that one too, dishonored him, and sent him away empty.

12He sent another, a third, but they wounded him too and threw him out.

13The lord of the vineyard said, "What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will respect him."

14But when the farmers saw him, they reasoned with one another, saying, "This is the heir; let us kill him, so the inheritance may become ours."

15So they drove him out of the vineyard and killed him. What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do to them?

16He will come and destroy these farmers and give the vineyard to others. When they heard it, they said, "May it never be!"

17But he fixed his gaze on them and said, "What then is this that stands written: 'The stone the builders rejected—this one became head of the corner'?"

18Everyone who falls on that stone will be shattered, but it will grind whomever it falls upon to powder.

19And the scribes and chief priests sought to lay hands on him in that hour, but they feared the people, for they knew that he had spoken this parable against them.

20And keeping watch, they sent spies feigning themselves righteous, in order to catch him in his word so as to deliver him to the rule and authority of the governor.

21And they asked him, "Teacher, we know that you speak and teach correctly, show no partiality, but teach the way of God in truth."

22Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar, or not?

23But he discerned their craftiness and said to them,

24Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it bear? They answered and said, "Caesar's."

25He said to them, "Then give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God."

26And they were unable to seize his statement before the people, but marveling at his answer, they fell silent.

27Then certain Sadducees who deny resurrection exists approached him and questioned him.

28Saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote to us, if a man’s brother dies having a wife, and he is childless, his brother should take the wife and raise up offspring for his brother.”

29There were therefore seven brothers, and the first, after taking a wife, died childless.

30And the second

31And the third took her likewise, and the seven also left no children and died.

32Later the woman also died.

33Therefore, in the resurrection, of which of them will she be the wife? For the seven had her as a wife.

34And Jesus said to them, "The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage."

35But those counted worthy to attain that age and the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage.

36Neither can they die any longer, for they are equal to angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.

37But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed at the bush when he calls the Lord the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.

38He is not God of the dead, but of the living, for all live to him.

39Some of the scribes answered, "Teacher, you said well."

40For they dared no longer to ask him anything.

41He said to them, "How do they say the Christ is David's son?"

42For David himself says in the book of psalms, "The Lord said to my Lord, 'Sit at my right hand.'"

43until I place your enemies as a footstool for your feet.

44David therefore calls him Lord—how is he his son?

45While all the people listened, he said to his disciples,

46Be on guard against the scribes who want to walk about in long robes and love greetings in the marketplaces, the foremost seats in the synagogues, and the places of honor at feasts.

47who devour widows' houses and for a show pray long prayers—these will receive greater condemnation.
