Luke 9

1He called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all the demons and diseases to heal.

2And he sent them to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.

3And he said to them, "Take nothing for the journey—neither staff nor bag nor bread nor money, nor have two tunics apiece."

4Whatever house you enter, stay there, and depart from there.

5And whoever does not receive you, when you leave that city, shake the dust from your feet as a testimony against them.

6They went out and passed through the villages, preaching good news and healing everywhere.

7Now Herod the tetrarch heard all that was happening, and he was perplexed because some were saying that John had risen from the dead.

8Some were saying that Elijah had appeared, while others that one of the ancient prophets had arisen.

9Herod said, "I beheaded John, but who is this, about whom I hear such things?" And he sought to see him.

10When the apostles returned, they declared to him everything they had done. Taking them, he withdrew privately to a city called Bethsaida.

11But the crowds, becoming aware, followed him, and he welcomed them, spoke to them about God's kingdom, and healed those who needed healing.

12As the day began to wane, the twelve came to him and said, “Dismiss the crowd so they may go into the nearby villages and countryside, find lodging and provisions, for we are here in a desolate place.”

13But he said to them, "You give them something to eat." They said, "We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless we go and buy food for all these people."

14For there were about five thousand men. He said to his disciples, "Seat them in companies of about fifty each."

15They did so and seated everyone.

16Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, blessed them, broke them, and gave them to the disciples to place before the crowd.

17They all ate and were satisfied, and twelve baskets of the surplus fragments were taken up for them.

18While he was praying alone, the disciples were with him, and he asked them, "Who do the crowds say I am?"

19They answered, "John the Baptist, but others Elijah, and others that one of the ancient prophets has arisen."

20He said to them, "But you, who do you say I am?" Answering, Peter said, "God's Messiah."

21But he sternly warned them and commanded them to tell no one this.

22saying, "The Son of Man must suffer many things, be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be put to death, and be raised on the third day."

23He said to everyone, "If anyone wants to come after me, let him deny himself, bear his cross daily, and follow me."

24For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake, he will save it.

25For what does it benefit a man to gain the whole world, yet lose himself or forfeit himself?

26For whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and that of the Father and of the holy angels.

27But I tell you truly, some of those standing here will never taste death until they see the kingdom of God.

28About eight days after these words, he took Peter, John, and James and went up the mountain to pray.

29As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothing became white and gleaming.

30And look, two men were conversing with him, who were Moses and Elijah.

31who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish in Jerusalem.

32Peter and those with him were weighed down with sleep, but when they awoke fully, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him.

33And it happened, as they were leaving him, that Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is good that we are here; let us make three tents—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah"—not knowing what he was saying.

34As he was saying these things, a cloud appeared and overshadowed them, and they became afraid while entering the cloud.

35And a voice came from the cloud, saying, "This is my chosen Son; listen to him!"

36And when the voice had taken place, Jesus was discovered alone. They kept silent and reported nothing of what they had seen to anyone in those days.

37It happened on the following day, when they had come down from the mountain, that a large crowd met him.

38And behold, a man from the crowd cried out, "Teacher, I entreat you to look upon my son, for he is my only child."

39And look, a spirit seizes him; suddenly it cries out and convulses him with foaming, and hardly departs from him, bruising him.

40And I implored your disciples to drive it out, but they were unable.

41Jesus answered, "O unbelieving and crooked generation, how long shall I be with you and endure you? Bring your son here."

42As he was still approaching, the demon threw him down and convulsed him. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and returned him to his father.

43God's majesty astounded them all, but while they all marveled at everything he was doing, he said to his disciples.

44Put these words into your ears, for the Son of Man is about to be handed over into the hands of men.

45But they did not grasp this saying, and it had been hidden from them so that they would not perceive it, and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.

46Then a dispute arose among them about which of them might be greater.

47But Jesus, perceiving the dispute of their hearts, took a child and set him by his side.

48And he said to them, “Whoever receives this child in my name receives me; and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me, for whoever is least among all of you, this one is great.”

49John replied, “Master, we saw someone driving out demons in your name, and we stopped him because he does not follow with us.”

50Jesus said to him, “Do not hinder him, for whoever is not against you is for you.”

51When the days of his ascension were being fulfilled, he set his face firmly to go to Jerusalem.

52He sent messengers ahead of him, and they went and entered a Samaritan village to prepare for him.

53And they did not receive him, because his face was headed for Jerusalem.

54When the disciples James and John saw it, they said, “Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?”

55But turning, he rebuked them.

56And they journeyed to another village.

57And as they went along the road, a certain man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”

58And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.”

59He said to another, "Follow me." But he said, "Lord, let me first go bury my father."

60But he said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God."

61Another said, "Lord, I will follow you, but first let me take leave of those at my house."

62But Jesus said, "No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks behind is fit for the kingdom of God."
