Luke 6

1It happened one Sabbath, as he passed through grainfields, that his disciples plucked the heads of grain and ate, rubbing them in their hands.

2But some of the Pharisees said to them, "Why do you do what is not permitted on the Sabbath?"

3And answering them, Jesus said, "Haven't you even read what David did when he himself was hungry and those who were with him?"

4how he entered God's house, took the bread of the Presence and ate it, and gave to those with him—which no one is permitted to eat except the priests alone.

5And he said to them, "The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath."

6And it happened on another Sabbath that he entered the synagogue and was teaching, and there was a man there whose right hand was withered.

7The scribes and Pharisees watched him to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, so they might find grounds to accuse him.

8But he knew their reasonings and said to the man with the withered hand, “Rise and stand in the midst.” And arising, he stood.

9Jesus said to them, "I ask you: is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save a life or to destroy it?"

10And looking around at them all, he said to him, "Stretch out your hand." He did, and his hand was restored.

11But they were filled with madness, and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.

12It happened during these days that he departed to the mountain to pray, and he spent the night in prayer to God.

13And when day came, he called his disciples and chose twelve from them, whom he also named apostles.

14Simon, whom he also named Peter, and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew.

15Matthew and Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, and Simon called the Zealot.

16and Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

17He came down with them and stood on a level plain with a great crowd of his disciples and a vast multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon.

18who came to hear him and be healed of their diseases, and those troubled by unclean spirits were being healed.

19And the whole crowd sought to touch him because power was going forth from him and healing everyone.

20And he lifted up his eyes to his disciples and said, "Blessed are the poor, because yours is the kingdom of God."

21Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.

22Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you and revile you and cast your name out as evil, for the Son of Man's sake.

23Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven, for their fathers did the same things to the prophets.

24But woe to you, the rich, for you have received your comfort.

25Woe to you who are full now, for you will hunger. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep.

26Woe when all people say good things about you, for their fathers did so to the false prophets.

27But I say to you who hear: love your enemies, do good to those who hate you.

28Bless those who curse you, and pray for those who treat you spitefully.

29To whoever strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from whoever takes your cloak, do not refuse your tunic.

30Give to everyone who asks you, and do not ask back from the one who takes your things.

31And as you want people to do to you, do the same to them.

32And if you love those who love you, what favor is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them.

33And if you do good to those who do good to you, what favor is that to you? Even sinners do the same.

34And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what favor is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners to receive back the same.

35But love your enemies, do good, and lend, expecting nothing; your reward will be abundant, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.

36Be merciful, as your Father is merciful.

37Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned; release, and you will be released.

38Give, and it will be given to you—a good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, poured into your bosom. For with whatever measure you measure, it will be measured back to you.

39He also spoke a parable to them: Can a blind man guide a blind man? Won't both fall into a pit?

40A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone, once fully trained, will be like his teacher.

41Why do you see the speck in your brother's eye, but not consider the beam in your own eye?

42How can you say to your brother, "Brother, let me remove the speck from your eye," when you yourself do not see the beam in your own eye? Hypocrite, first cast the beam out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.

43For no good tree produces rotten fruit, nor again does a rotten tree produce good fruit.

44For each tree is recognized by its own fruit, for they do not gather figs from thorns, nor grapes from a bramble bush.

45The good man brings forth good from the good treasure of his heart, and the evil man brings forth evil from the evil treasure, for out of the heart's abundance his mouth speaks.

46Why do you call me “Lord, Lord,” and not do what I say?

47Everyone who comes to me, hears my words, and does them, I will show you to whom he is like.

48He is like a man building a house who dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock. When a flood arose, the stream beat against that house but could not shake it, because it had been well built.

49But the one who hears and does not do is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation, against which the river beat; and immediately it collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great.
