Luke 8

1Soon afterward he journeyed through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing good news of God's kingdom, with the twelve.

2and certain women who had been healed of evil spirits and sicknesses: Mary called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out.

3and Joanna, wife of Chuza, Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others, who served them from their possessions.

4As a large crowd gathered and those from every city came to him, he spoke in a parable.

5A sower went out to sow his seed, and as he sowed, some fell beside the road, it was trampled, and the birds of the sky devoured it.

6And another fell on the rock, and as it sprouted, it dried up because it did not have moisture.

7And other fell among the thorns, and the thorns grew up with it and choked it.

8And other fell into good ground, grew, and produced fruit a hundredfold. As he said these things, he cried out, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear."

9His disciples asked him what this parable might mean.

10He said, "To you it has been given to know the mysteries of God's kingdom, but to the rest in parables, so that though they see they do not see, and though they hear they do not understand."

11Now this is the parable: the seed is God's word.

12Those beside the path are the ones who hear, then the devil comes and removes the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.

13But those on the rock receive the word with joy when they hear it; these have no root, who believe for a season and fall away in a season of testing.

14What fell among thorns—these are the hearers who, going their way, get choked by worries and riches and pleasures of life, and yield no mature fruit.

15But those in the good ground are the ones who, in a noble and good heart, having heard the word, hold it fast and bear fruit with patience.

16No one lights a lamp and covers it with a vessel or places it under a bed, but sets it on a lampstand so those who enter may see the light.

17For nothing is hidden that will not become manifest; neither anything secret that will not be known and come into the open.

18Pay attention, therefore, to how you hear. For whoever has will be given to him, and whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has will be taken away from him.

19His mother and brothers came to him, but they could not reach him because of the crowd.

20And it was reported to him, "Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you."

21But he replied to them, “My mother and my brothers are these who hear the word of God and do it.”

22It happened one of those days that he got into a boat with his disciples and said to them, "Let us cross to the other side of the lake," and they set sail.

23As they sailed, he fell asleep, but a windstorm came down upon the lake, and they were filling up and in danger.

24They came to him and woke him, saying, "Master, master, we are perishing!" But waking up, he rebuked the wind and the surging of the water, and they stopped, and calm set in.

25He said to them, "Where is your faith?" Terrified, they marveled, saying to one another, "Who then is this, who even commands the winds and the water, and they obey him?"

26And they arrived in the region of the Gerasenes, which lies opposite Galilee.

27As he came ashore, a certain man from the city met him who had demons for a long time, wore no clothes, and did not stay in a house but in the tombs.

28When he saw Jesus, he cried out, fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, "What do I have to do with you, Jesus, Son of God Most High? I beg you, do not torment me."

29For he was commanding the unclean spirit to depart from the man, for it had seized him many times; and though kept under guard and bound with chains and fetters, breaking the bonds he was driven by the demon into the desolate places.

30Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" He said, "Legion," because many demons had entered him.

31And they begged him not to command them to go into the abyss.

32Now there was there a herd of many pigs feeding on the mountain, and they begged him to permit them to enter those. He permitted them.

33Then the demons departed from the man and entered the pigs, and the herd rushed down the precipice into the lake and drowned.

34When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they fled and reported it in the city and countryside.

35Then they went out to see what had happened, came to Jesus, and found the man out of whom the demons had departed sitting at Jesus's feet, clothed and of sound mind, and they were afraid.

36And those who had seen reported to them how the demon-possessed one was healed.

37Then the whole multitude of the surrounding region of the Gerasenes begged him to leave them, because great fear gripped them. But he boarded the boat and returned.

38But the man from whom the demons had gone out begged him to be with him, but he sent him away, saying,

39Return to your home and tell what great things God has done for you. And he departed, proclaiming throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done for him.

40When Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him.

41Look, a man named Jairus came—a ruler of the synagogue—who fell at Jesus's feet and pleaded with him to enter his house.

42because he had an only daughter about twelve years old, and she was dying. But as he went, the crowds were crowding him.

43And a woman suffering from a flow of blood for twelve years, who had spent her entire livelihood on physicians, could not be healed by anyone.

44She approached from behind and touched the fringe of his garment, and immediately the flow of her blood stopped.

45Jesus said, "Who touched me?" As everyone denied it, Peter said, "Master, the crowds press you and crowd you."

46But Jesus said, "Someone touched me, for I perceived power going out from me."

47Seeing that she had not escaped notice, the woman came trembling, fell before him, and declared before all the people the reason she had touched him and how she was healed immediately.

48But he said to her, "Daughter, your faith has saved you; go in peace."

49While he was still speaking, someone came from the synagogue ruler, saying, "Your daughter has died; trouble the Teacher no longer."

50But Jesus, having heard, answered him, "Do not fear—only believe, and she will be saved."

51When he arrived at the house, he permitted no one to enter with him except Peter, John, James, the child's father, and her mother.

52All were weeping and lamenting her, but he said, "Do not weep, for she did not die but is sleeping."

53And they ridiculed him, knowing she had died.

54But he took hold of her hand and called, saying, "Child, arise."

55And her spirit returned, and she arose immediately, and he commanded something to be given her to eat.

56Her parents were astonished, but he commanded them to tell no one what had happened.
