Luke 23

1And their whole multitude arose and led him before Pilate.

2They began to accuse him, saying, "We found this man subverting our nation, forbidding tribute to Caesar to be paid, and claiming himself to be Christ, a king."

3Pilate asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" He answered him, "You say."

4Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, "I find no guilt in this man."

5But they pressed on all the more insistently, saying that he stirs up the people by teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee even to here.

6But Pilate, having heard, asked if the man is a Galilean.

7And when he recognized that he was under Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem during those days.

8When Herod saw Jesus, he rejoiced greatly, for he had long desired to see him because of hearing about him, and he hoped to see some miracle done by him.

9He kept questioning him with many words, but he answered him nothing.

10And the chief priests and the scribes stood accusing him vehemently.

11But Herod, with his soldiers, treated him with contempt and mocked him, arrayed him in splendid clothing, and sent him back to Pilate.

12Herod and Pilate became friends with each other that day, for previously they had been at enmity toward one another.

13Pilate then called together the chief priests, the rulers, and the people.

14He said to them, "You brought this man to me as one perverting the people, and look, I, having examined him before you, found no basis for a charge against this man in those things you accuse him of."

15But neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us, and look, nothing worthy of death has been done by him.

16Therefore I will punish him and release him.

18But they all cried out together, saying, “Take this man away, but free Barabbas for us!”

19who for a certain uprising that arose in the city, and for murder, had been thrown into prison.

20Pilate addressed them again, wanting to release Jesus.

21But they kept shouting, "Crucify him! Crucify him!"

22But for a third time he said to them, "Why? What wrong has this man done? I have found nothing in him deserving death. Therefore I will discipline him and release him."

23But they insisted with loud voices, demanding that he be crucified, and their voices prevailed.

24And Pilate decided that their request should be carried out.

25He released the one thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, whom they were demanding, but delivered Jesus to their will.

26As they led him away, they seized a certain Simon, a Cyrenian coming from the country, and laid the cross on him to carry behind Jesus.

27A great multitude of the people and women who were lamenting and wailing for him followed him.

28But Jesus turned to them and said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children."

29Because look, days are coming in which they will say, "Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed."

30Then they will begin saying to the mountains, "Fall on us," and to the hills, "Cover us."

31For if they do these things in green wood, what will happen in the dry?

32Two other criminals were also led with him to be put to death.

33When they came to the place called Skull, they crucified him there with the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left.

34Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." Dividing his garments, they cast lots.

35And the people stood watching, but the rulers also mocked him, saying, "He saved others; let him save himself if this is the Christ of God, the chosen one."

36The soldiers also mocked him, approaching him and offering him vinegar.

37and saying, "If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself!"

38There was also an inscription over him: "This is the King of the Jews."

39But one of the criminals who had been hanged was blaspheming him, saying, "Aren't you the Christ? Save yourself and us!"

40But the other answered, rebuking him: "Do you not even fear God, because you are in the same condemnation?"

41And we indeed justly receive the fitting return for what we did, but this man did nothing improper.

42And he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."

43And he said to him, "Amen, I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise."

44It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole earth until the ninth.

45The sun darkened, and the veil of the temple was split in the middle.

46And crying out with a loud voice, Jesus said, "Father, into your hands I entrust my spirit." With these words, he breathed his last.

47When the centurion saw what had happened, he praised God, saying, "Truly this man was righteous."

48And all the crowds who had gathered for this spectacle, when they saw what had happened, returned beating their breasts.

49All his acquaintances and the women who followed along with him from Galilee were standing at a distance, watching these things.

50And look, a man named Joseph who was a counselor, a good and righteous man.

51He had not consented to their purpose and deed—from Arimathea, a city of the Jews—who was waiting for the kingdom of God.

52He approached Pilate and requested Jesus' body.

53And he took it down, wrapped it in linen, and placed him in a rock-hewn tomb where no one had yet been laid.

54It was the day of preparation, and the Sabbath was dawning.

55Now the women who had accompanied him from Galilee followed closely, saw the tomb, and noted how his body was placed.

56They returned and prepared spices and ointments, and indeed rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment.
