Luke 10

1After these things the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him into every city and place where he himself was about to come.

2He said to them, “The harvest is abundant, but the laborers few; therefore pray to the Lord of the harvest that he send laborers into his harvest.”

3Go! Look, I send you as lambs among wolves.

4Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals, and greet no one along the way.

5And whatever house you enter, first say, “Peace to this house.”

6And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him; but if not, it will return to you.

7Stay in that house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not go from house to house.

8And into whatever city you enter, if they welcome you, eat what is placed before you.

9And heal the sick there, and say to them, “The kingdom of God has come near to you.”

10But into whichever city you enter and they do not accept you, go out into its streets and say,

11Even the dust from your city that clings to our feet, we wipe off against you. Nevertheless, know this: the kingdom of God has come near.

12I say to you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on that day than for that city.

13Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done among you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.

14But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon in the judgment than for you.

15And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted to heaven? You will be brought down to hell.

16Whoever hears you hears me, and whoever rejects you rejects me. But whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.

17The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, "Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name."

18He said to them, "I saw Satan fall from heaven like lightning."

19Look, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the enemy's power; nothing will harm you in any way.

20Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this—that the spirits submit to you—but rejoice that your names are written in the heavens.

21In that hour he exulted in the Holy Spirit and said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you hid these things from the wise and understanding, and revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, for so it pleased you."

22All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and to whomever the Son desires to reveal him.

23And turning to the disciples privately, he said, "Blessed are the eyes that see what you see."

24For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see and did not see, and to hear what you hear and did not hear.

25And look, a certain lawyer stood up to test him, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"

26He said to him, "What has been written in the law? How do you read it?"

27Replying, he said, "You shall love the Lord your God with your whole heart, with your whole soul, with your whole might, and with your whole understanding; and your neighbor as yourself."

28He said to him, “You answered rightly. Do this, and you will live.”

29But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"

30Jesus replied, "A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell among robbers, who stripped him, inflicted blows on him, and departed, leaving him half dead."

31Now a certain priest happened to be descending that same road, and seeing him, he passed by on the opposite side.

32Likewise a Levite also, upon reaching the spot and seeing him, passed by on the opposite side.

33But a certain Samaritan, journeying, came to him and, seeing him, was moved with compassion.

34He approached and bandaged his wounds while pouring oil and wine on them, set him on his own beast, brought him to an inn, and cared for him.

35And the next day, producing two denarii, he handed them to the innkeeper and said to him, “Look after him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I return.”

36Which of these three seems to you to have become a neighbor to the one who fell among the robbers?

37He said, "The one who showed mercy to him." Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise."

38As they journeyed, he entered a certain village, and a certain woman named Martha received him.

39And she had a sister named Mary, who also sat at Jesus' feet and listened to his word.

40But Martha was distracted by much serving, and coming up to him she said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister left me alone to serve? Tell her therefore to help me."

41But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you worry and are disturbed about many things.”

42But few things are needed—or one. Mary chose the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.
