Luke 3

1In the fifteenth year of Tiberius Caesar's reign, Pontius Pilate governing Judea, Herod ruling Galilee as tetrarch, his brother Philip ruling the Ituraea and Trachonitis region as tetrarch, and Lysanias ruling Abilene as tetrarch.

2When Annas and Caiaphas were high priests, the word of God came to John, son of Zechariah, in the wilderness.

3And he came into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming baptism of repentance for forgiveness of sins.

4As it is written in the scroll of the words of Isaiah the prophet, a voice cries in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord; make his paths straight.

5Every valley will be filled, every mountain and hill brought low, the crooked turned straight, and the rough into smooth ways.

6And all flesh will see God's salvation.

7So he said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, "Brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?"

8Therefore produce fruits fit for repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, "We have Abraham as father," for I say to you that God can raise children for Abraham from these stones.

9Even now the axe lies at the root of the trees; every tree therefore not producing good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

10And the crowds asked him, "What then shall we do?"

11He answered them, "Whoever has two coats should share with the one who has none, and whoever has food should do likewise."

12Tax collectors also came to be baptized and said to him, "Teacher, what shall we do?"

13And he said to them, “Do nothing more than what has been appointed to you.”

14Soldiers also questioned him, saying, "What shall we do?" He said to them, "Do not extort from anyone, nor accuse anyone falsely, and be satisfied with your pay."

15As the people waited expectantly and everyone pondered in their hearts about John—whether he might be the Christ—

16John answered everyone, saying, "I indeed baptize you with water, but one mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire."

17whose winnowing fan is in his hand to clear his threshing floor thoroughly and gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.

18So with many other exhortations indeed, he was preaching good news to the people.

19But Herod the tetrarch, rebuked by him over Herodias his brother's wife and over all the wicked things Herod had done,

20He also added this on top of all and locked John up in prison.

21Now when all the people had been baptized, Jesus had been baptized too and was praying, heaven opened.

22And the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form as a dove, and a voice came from heaven: "You are my beloved Son; in you I am well pleased."

23And Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began, being—as was supposed—the son of Joseph, son of Eli.
