Luke 19

1And he entered and passed through Jericho.

2And look, a man named Zacchaeus—he was a chief tax collector, and he was rich.

3And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not because of the crowd, since he was short in stature.

4He ran ahead and climbed onto a sycamore tree to see him, because he was about to pass that way.

5When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down quickly, for today I must stay at your house.”

6And hurrying, he came down and welcomed him joyfully.

7And when they saw it, they all began grumbling, saying, "He went to stay with a sinful man."

8Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord, half of my possessions I give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I repay fourfold."

9Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, for he too is a son of Abraham.”

10For the Son of Man came to seek and save the lost.

11As they listened to these things, he spoke a further parable because he was near Jerusalem, and they reckoned that God's kingdom was about to appear at once.

12He therefore said, "A certain nobleman journeyed to a distant region to receive a kingdom for himself and return."

13He called ten of his servants, gave them ten minas, and said to them, "Do business until I come."

14But his citizens hated him and sent an embassy after him, saying, "We do not want this man to reign over us."

15When he returned, having received the kingdom, he commanded these servants, to whom he had given the money, to be called to him, so that he might know what they had gained by trading.

16Then the first came, saying, "Lord, your mina has gained ten minas."

17And he said to him, "Well done, good servant! Because you were faithful in very little, have authority over ten cities."

18And the second came, saying, "Lord, your mina has made five minas."

19He said also to him, "And you, be over five cities."

20And another came, saying, "Lord, behold, your mina, which I had laid away in a napkin."

21For I feared you, because you are a stern man: you take up what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.

22He said to him, "From your mouth I will judge you, wicked servant! You knew that I am an austere man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow."

23Then why did you not give my money to the bank, and when I came I would have collected it with interest?

24And he said to the bystanders, "Take the mina from him and give it to the one who has ten minas."

25And they said to him, "Lord, he has ten minas!"

26I tell you, to everyone who has more will be given; but from the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away.

27But these enemies of mine who did not want me to reign over them—bring them here and slaughter them before me.

28Having said these things, he went ahead, ascending to Jerusalem.

29And as he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mountain called Olives, he sent two of his disciples.

30Saying, “Go into the village opposite, where as you enter you will find a colt tied, on which no man has ever sat; untie it and bring it.”

31And if anyone asks you, “Why are you untying it?”, say this: “The Lord needs it.”

32Those who were sent went and found it as he had said to them.

33As they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, "Why are you untying the colt?"

34They said, "The Lord has need of it."

35They brought the colt to Jesus, threw their clothes onto it, and set Jesus on them.

36As he went, they spread their garments in the road.

37As he drew near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen.

38saying, "Blessed is the coming king in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest!"

39Some Pharisees from the crowd said to him, "Teacher, rebuke your disciples!"

40And answering, he said, "I tell you, if these become silent, the stones will cry out."

41And as he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it.

42saying, "If you had known on this day—even you—the things for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes."

43For days will come upon you when your enemies raise a rampart against you, surround you, and close you in on every side.

44They will raze you to the ground along with your children within you, and they will not leave stone on stone in you, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.

45And he entered the temple and began to drive out those selling.

46saying to them, "It stands written, 'My house shall be a house of prayer,' but you made it a den of robbers."

47He was teaching day by day in the temple, but the chief priests and the scribes and the leading men of the people were seeking to destroy him.

48And they were unable to find what they should do, for all the people hung upon him, listening.
