Genesis 34

1Dinah, the daughter whom Leah bore to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.

2Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, ruler of the land, saw her, took her, lay with her, and humbled her.

3His soul clung to Dinah, Jacob's daughter, and he loved the young woman and spoke to her heart.

4Shechem said to his father Hamor, "Get this girl for me as a wife."

5Jacob heard that he had defiled his daughter Dinah, while his sons were with his cattle in the field, and he remained silent until they came.

6Hamor, Shechem's father, went out to Jacob to speak with him.

7Jacob's sons arrived from the field when they heard it; the men felt deep pain and burned with fierce anger because he had perpetrated an outrage in Israel by sleeping with Jacob's daughter—something that must never be done.

8Hamor spoke with them: "The soul of my son Shechem desires your daughter; please give her to him as a wife."

9Intermarry with us; give us your daughters, and take our daughters for yourselves.

10Dwell with us, and the land shall be before you; dwell and trade in it, and take hold of it.

11Shechem said to her father and her brothers, "Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you say to me, I will give."

12Increase the dowry and gift greatly upon me, and I will give whatever you say to me; give me the young woman as a wife.

13The sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceptively and spoke, because he had defiled their sister Dinah.

14They said to them, "We cannot do such a thing as giving our sister to an uncircumcised man, for that would be a reproach to us."

15Only in this way will we agree with you, if you become like us by circumcising every one of your males.

16We will give you our daughters and take your daughters for ourselves, and we will live with you, and we will become one people.

17But if you will not obey us to circumcise yourselves, we will take our daughter and go.

18Their words were pleasing to Hamor and to Shechem, Hamor's son.

19The young man did not delay doing the matter, because he delighted in Jacob's daughter, and he was honored above all in his father's house.

20Hamor and his son Shechem came to the gate of their city and spoke with the men of their city, saying,

21These men are at peace with us. Let them settle in the land and do business there. Look, the land has ample room for them. Let us take their daughters as our wives, and let us give our daughters to them.

22Only on this condition will these men agree to dwell among us, to become one people, if every male among us is circumcised, as they are.

23Won't their cattle and their possessions and all their beasts be ours? Only let us consent to them, and they will dwell with us.

24All who went out through the gate of his city heeded Hamor and Shechem his son, and every male was circumcised—all who went out through the gate of his city.

25On the third day, when they were hurting, Simeon and Levi, two sons of Jacob and Dinah's brothers, each took his sword, came upon the city confidently, and killed every male.

26They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with the sword's edge, took Dinah from Shechem's house, and went out.

27Jacob's sons came upon the slain and looted the city, because they had defiled their sister.

28They took their flocks, their cattle, their donkeys, everything in the city, and everything in the field.

29They captured all their wealth, all their little ones, and their wives, and plundered everything that was in the house.

30Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have troubled me, making me loathsome to the land's dwellers, the Canaanites and Perizzites. With my few men in number, they will gather against me and strike me, and I will be destroyed, I and my house."

31They said, "Should he treat our sister like a prostitute?"
