Genesis 27

1When Isaac grew old and his eyes grew dim so he could no longer see, he called his older son Esau and said to him, "My son." He said to him, "Here I am."

2He said, "Look now, I have grown old. I do not know the day of my death."

3So now, please take your weapons, your quiver, and your bow, and go out to the field, and hunt some venison for me.

4Prepare savory dishes for me, such as I love, and bring them to me that I may eat, so my soul may bless you before I die.

5Rebekah listened as Isaac spoke to his son Esau. Esau went to the field to hunt game and bring it.

6And Rebekah said to Jacob her son, "Behold, I heard your father speaking to Esau your brother, saying,

7Bring me game and make me delicacies, that I may eat and bless you before Yahweh before my death.

8Now, my son, obey my voice as I command you.

9Go now to the flock, take from there for me two choice kids of the goats, and I will make them appetizing dishes for your father, as he loves.

10Bring it to your father so that he eats and blesses you before his death.

11Jacob said to his mother Rebekah, "Look, Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man."

12Perhaps my father will touch me, and I will seem like a deceiver in his eyes, and I will bring a curse upon myself, not a blessing.

13His mother said to him, “May your curse fall on me, my son. Just heed my voice, and go get them for me.”

14He went and took them and brought them to his mother, who made savory dishes as his father loved.

15Rebekah took the prized garments of her elder son Esau, which were with her in the house, and dressed her younger son Jacob in them.

16She put the skins of the young goats on his hands and on the smooth parts of his neck.

17She put the savory dishes and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Jacob.

18He went in to his father and said, "My father." He said, "Here I am. Who are you, my son?"

19Jacob said to his father, "I am Esau, your firstborn. I have done just as you told me. Please get up, sit, and eat some of my game, so your soul may bless me."

20Isaac said to his son, "How did you find it so quickly, my son?" He said, "Because Yahweh your God caused it to happen before me."

21Isaac said to Jacob, "Draw near, please, that I may feel you, my son, whether you are really my son Esau or not."

22Jacob approached his father Isaac, and he felt him and said, "The voice is Jacob's voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau."

23He did not recognize him because his hands were like his brother Esau's hairy hands, and he blessed him.

24He said, "Are you really my son Esau?" He said, "I am."

25He said, "Bring it to me, and I will eat from my son's hunt, so my soul may bless you." He brought it to him, and he ate. He brought wine to him, and he drank.

26His father Isaac said to him, "Come near now, and kiss me, my son."

27He drew near and kissed him. He smelled the scent of his garments and blessed him, and said, "See, the scent of my son is like the scent of a field that Yahweh has blessed."

28May God give you dew from the heavens and fatness from the earth, with abundance of grain and new wine.

29May peoples serve you, and nations bow to you. Be master over your brothers, and your mother's sons bow to you. Cursed be whoever curses you, and blessed be whoever blesses you.

30As soon as Isaac finished blessing Jacob, and Jacob had barely left his father Isaac's presence, Esau his brother arrived from his hunt.

31He also prepared appetizing food and brought it to his father. He said to his father, “Rise, my father, and eat from his son’s game, so your soul may bless me.”

32His father Isaac said to him, “Who are you?” He answered, “I am your son, your firstborn Esau.”

33Isaac trembled violently and said, "Who then is he who hunted game and brought it to me? I ate all of it before you came, and I blessed him. Indeed, blessed will he be."

34When Esau listened carefully to his father's words, he cried a great and bitter cry unto exceeding, and answered his father, "Bless me abundantly, even me also, my father."

35He said, "Your brother came by deceit and took your blessing."

36He said, "Is Jacob not a fitting name for him? He has supplanted me twice—he took my birthright, and now, look, he has taken my blessing." He said, "Have you not reserved a blessing for me?"

37Isaac answered Esau, "See, I have set him as your master, and given all his brothers to him for servants, sustaining him with grain and new wine. Now what shall I do for you, my son?"

38Esau answered his father, "Is the blessing only one—yours, my father? Bless me too, even me, my father." Esau raised his voice and wept.

39Isaac his father answered and said to him, "See, your dwelling will be from the fatness of the earth and from the dew of the heavens from above."

40You will live by your sword and serve your brother. When you gain the upper hand, you will break his yoke from your neck.

41Esau hated Jacob over the blessing his father had given him. Esau thought to himself, "My father's days of mourning draw near; then I will kill my brother Jacob."

42Rebekah was informed of her elder son Esau's words, so she sent and called her younger son Jacob and said to him, "See, your brother Esau consoles himself concerning you to kill you."

43Now, my son, heed my voice; arise, flee to Laban my brother in Haran.

44Dwell with him a few days, until your brother's anger subsides.

45until your brother's anger turns from you and he forgets what you did to him; then I will send and bring you from there. Why should I also be bereaved of you both in one day?

46Rebekah said to Isaac, "I loathe my life because of the daughters of Heth—if Jacob takes a wife from the daughters of Heth, like these from the daughters of the land, what use is my life to me?"
