Genesis 17

1When Abram was ninety-nine years old, Yahweh appeared to Abram and said to him, "I am God Almighty. Walk before me and be blameless."

2I will establish my covenant between me and you, and I will multiply you exceedingly.

3Abram fell facedown, and God spoke with him, saying.

4As for me, look, my covenant is with you; you will be a father of many nations.

5No longer will your name be called Abram, but your name will be Abraham, for I have appointed you father of a multitude of nations.

6I will make you abundantly fruitful, and I will make you into nations, and kings will come from you.

7I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations as an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and your offspring after you.

8I will give to you and your offspring after you the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, as an everlasting possession; and I will be God to them.

9God said to Abraham, "You shall keep my covenant—you and your offspring after you throughout their generations."

10This is my covenant that you shall keep between me and you and your descendants after you: every male among you shall be circumcised.

11Circumcise the flesh of your foreskins, and it will be a sign of the covenant between me and you.

12An eight-day-old son shall be circumcised among you, every male throughout your generations—born in the house or bought with silver from any son of a foreigner who is not from your seed.

13One born in your house and one bought with your money must be circumcised, and my covenant will be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.

14Any uncircumcised male who fails to circumcise the flesh of his foreskin—that person shall be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant.

15God said to Abraham, "Sarai your wife—you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name."

16I will bless her, and I will also give you a son from her. I will bless her, and she will become a mother of nations; kings of peoples will arise from her.

17Abraham fell facedown and laughed, and said to himself, "Will a son be born to a hundred-year-old man? And will Sarah, a ninety-year-old woman, bear?"

18Abraham said to God, "If only Ishmael would live before you!"

19But God said, No, Sarah your wife will bear you a son; you shall call his name Isaac, and I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his offspring after him.

20And Ishmael, I have heard you. See, I have blessed him, and I will make him fruitful and multiply him exceedingly; he will father twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation.

21But I will establish my covenant with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you at this appointed time next year.

22When he finished speaking with him, God went up from above Abraham.

23Abraham took his son Ishmael, everyone born in his house, everyone he had bought with his silver, every male among the men of Abraham's house, and circumcised the flesh of their foreskins that very day, just as God had told him.

24Abraham was ninety-nine years of age when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.

25Ishmael his son was thirteen years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.

26That very day Abraham and his son Ishmael were circumcised.

27All the men of his house, those born in the house and those purchased with silver from a son of a foreigner, were circumcised with him.
