Genesis 33

1Jacob raised his eyes and saw Esau coming with four hundred men. He divided the children among Leah, Rachel, and the two maidservants.

2He put the maidservants and their children first, Leah and her children after, and Rachel and Joseph last.

3He himself passed ahead of them and bowed to the ground seven times until he drew near to his brother.

4Esau rushed to meet him, embraced him, fell on his neck, kissed him, and they wept.

5He raised his eyes and saw the women and the children, and said, "Who are these with you?" He said, "The children whom God has shown favor to your servant."

6The maidservants, they and their children, approached and bowed down.

7Leah approached too with her children, and they bowed down. Afterward Joseph approached with Rachel, and they bowed down.

8He said, "What does all this company that I met have to do with you?" He said, "To find favor in the eyes of my lord."

9Esau said, "I have plenty, my brother; let what is yours be yours."

10Jacob said, "No, please—if now I have found favor in your eyes, then take my gift from my hand, because I have seen your face, as one sees God's face, and you have accepted me."

11Please accept my blessing that was brought to you, because God has shown me favor, and because I have everything. He urged him, and he took it.

12He said, "Let us set out and go, and I will go ahead of you."

13He said to him, “My lord knows that the children are tender, and the flocks and cattle with their young are with me—if they drive them hard one day, all the flocks will die.”

14Please, my lord, go on before your servant, and I will travel gently in step with the livestock before me and in step with the children, until I come to my lord at Seir.

15Esau said, "Please let me leave some of the people who are with me with you." He said, "Why this? Let me find favor in the eyes of my lord."

16Esau went back that day on his road to Seir.

17Jacob journeyed to Succoth, built a house for himself, and made booths for his livestock; therefore the name of the place was called Succoth.

18Jacob came safely to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Paddan-aram, and encamped before the city.

19He bought a portion of the field where he had pitched his tent, from the sons of Hamor, Shechem's father, for a hundred pieces of money.

20He set up an altar there and called it El, the God of Israel.
