Genesis 4

The man knew Eve his wife; she conceived and bore Cain, and said, "I have acquired a man with Yahweh."

Again she bore his brother Abel. Abel was a shepherd of flocks, but Cain was a worker of the ground.

Some time later, Cain brought an offering to Yahweh from the fruit of the ground.

Abel also brought firstborn from his flock and their fat portions, and Yahweh regarded Abel and his offering.

But he did not look upon Cain and his offering. Cain burned exceedingly with anger, and his face fell.

Yahweh said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why has your face fallen?"

If you do right, won't you be accepted? But if you do not, sin crouches at the door, its desire toward you, yet you shall rule over it.

Cain said to Abel, his brother; and when they were in the field, Cain rose up against Abel, his brother, and killed him.

Yahweh said to Cain, "Where is Abel, your brother?" He said, "I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?"

He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground.”

Now you are cursed from the ground, which opened its mouth to take your brother's blood from your hand.

When you work the ground, it will no longer give its strength to you; you will be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth.

Cain said to Yahweh, "My iniquity is too great to bear."

Look, you have driven me out today from the face of the ground and from your face; I will be hidden, and I will be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.

Yahweh said to him, “Therefore whoever kills Cain will be avenged sevenfold.” Yahweh set a sign for Cain, lest anyone finding him strike him.

Cain went out from before Yahweh and dwelt in the land of Nod, east of Eden.

Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. He built a city and called it by the name of his son Enoch.

Enoch fathered Irad, Irad fathered Mehujael, Mehujael fathered Methusael, and Methusael fathered Lamech.

Lamech took two wives for himself: the name of one was Adah, and the name of the other was Zillah.

Adah bore Jabal; he was the father of tent-dwellers and livestock owners.

His brother's name was Jubal, who was the father of all who handle the harp and pipe.

Zillah also gave birth to Tubal-cain, instructor of every craftsman in bronze and iron, and Tubal-cain's sister was Naamah.

Lamech said to his wives, Adah and Zillah, "Hear my voice, wives of Lamech; listen to my words, for I have killed a man over my wound, a youth over my bruise."

If Cain is avenged seven times, Lamech will be avenged seventy-seven times.

Adam slept with his wife again; she bore a son and named him Seth: "For God has appointed another offspring for me in place of Abel, for Cain killed him."

A son was also born to Seth, and he named him Enosh; then the name of Yahweh began to be called upon.
