Genesis 9

1God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth.”

2Dread of you and terror of you will be upon every living creature of the earth, upon every bird of the sky, upon everything that creeps on the ground, and upon all the fish of the sea; they are given into your hand.

3Every moving thing that lives will be food for you; just as the green plants, I have given everything to you.

4But you shall not eat flesh with its life in its blood.

5Surely I will require your blood for your lives from the hand of every beast—I will require it—and from the hand of the man, from the hand of a man's brother, I will require the life of the man.

6Whoever sheds human blood, humans shall shed his blood, for God made humankind in his image.

7You, be fruitful, multiply, teem in the earth, and multiply in it.

8God said to Noah and to his sons with him, saying,

9Look, I am establishing my covenant with you and with your offspring after you.

10And with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the cattle, and every animal of the earth with you—from all that go out of the ark to every animal of the earth.

11I establish my covenant with you: never again will all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood, nor will there be a flood anymore to destroy the earth.

12God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I give between me and you and every living creature with you, for generations forever.”

13I have placed my bow in the cloud, and it will be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.

14When I bring a cloud over the earth, the rainbow will appear in the cloud.

15I will remember my covenant that stands between me and you and every living soul in all flesh, and the waters will no longer become a flood to destroy all flesh.

16The rainbow will be in the cloud, and I will see it to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh on the earth.

17God said to Noah, "This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth."

18Noah's sons who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth; Ham was the father of Canaan.

19These three were the sons of Noah, and from them the whole earth was scattered.

20Noah began to be a man of the ground and planted a vineyard.

21He drank from the wine and became drunk, and uncovered himself inside his tent.

22Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father's nakedness and told his two brothers outside.

23Shem and Japheth took a garment, placed it over both their shoulders, walked backward, and covered their father's nakedness. Their faces were turned backward, and they did not see their father's nakedness.

24Noah woke from his wine and realized what his youngest son had done to him.

25He said, "Cursed is Canaan; he shall be a servant of servants to his brothers."

26He said, "Blessed be Yahweh, God of Shem; let Canaan be their servant."

27May God enlarge Japheth, let him dwell in Shem's tents, and let Canaan be their servant.

28Noah lived three hundred and fifty years after the flood.

29All Noah's days altogether came to nine hundred fifty years, and he died.
