Genesis 39

1Joseph was brought down to Egypt, and Potiphar, Pharaoh's officer and captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the hand of the Ishmaelites who had brought him down there.

2Yahweh was with Joseph, and he was a successful man. He was in the house of his Egyptian master.

3His master saw that Yahweh was with him, and that Yahweh prospered all that he did in his hand.

4Joseph found favor in his sight and served him, and he appointed him over his house and put everything he had into his hand.

5From the time he put him in charge of his house and over everything he owned, Yahweh blessed the Egyptian's house because of Joseph, and the blessing of Yahweh was on all that he owned in the house and in the field.

6He entrusted everything he had to Joseph and paid no attention to anything with him except the food he himself ate. Joseph was handsome in form and handsome in appearance.

7It happened after these events that his master's wife lifted her eyes to Joseph and said, "Lie with me."

8But he refused and said to his master's wife, "Look, my master does not know what there is with me in the house, and he has given everything he has into my hand."

9No one is greater in this house than I; he has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife—how then could I commit this great evil and sin against God?

10As she spoke to Joseph day after day, he did not listen to her to lie beside her or to be with her.

11About that time he entered the house to carry out his work, and none of the household men were there inside.

12She grabbed him by his garment, saying, "Lie with me!" He left his garment in her hand and fled outside.

13When she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and fled outside,

14She called to the men of her house and said to them, “See, he brought a Hebrew man to us to mock us. He came to me to lie with me, and I cried out with a loud voice.”

15It happened, when he heard that I raised my voice and called out, that he abandoned his garment beside me and fled outside.

16She laid his garment beside her until his master came to his house.

17She spoke to him with words like these, saying, "The Hebrew servant whom you brought to us came to me to mock me."

18And it was, as I raised my voice and called, that he abandoned his garment beside me and fled outside.

19When his master heard his wife's words that she spoke to him—"Your servant did this to me"—his anger burned.

20Joseph's master took him and delivered him to the prison house, the place where the king's bound prisoners were confined, and he was there in the prison house.

21Yahweh was with Joseph, extended kindness to him, and gave him favor in the eyes of the captain of the prison.

22The chief of the prison put all the prisoners who were in the prison into Joseph's hand, and whatever they were doing there, he was doing it.

23The prison keeper took no notice of anything under his charge because Yahweh was with him, and whatever he did, Yahweh caused to succeed.
