Bible answers

What does the Bible say about temptation?

Temptation in Scripture is ordinary, not a private shame that proves you are uniquely failed. The Bible takes it seriously, refuses to blame God for it, and promises both a sympathetic Savior and a way of escape that is usually more like a door than a feeling.

Temptation in the Bible

  • 1 Corinthians 10:13Temptation is common; God is faithful and provides a way of escape so you can endure it.
  • James 1:13-15God does not tempt anyone; desire conceives, then gives birth to sin, and sin to death.
  • Matthew 26:41Watch and pray, so that you will not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, the flesh is weak.
  • Hebrews 4:15-16Jesus was tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin; draw near for mercy and help.
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
1 Corinthians 10:13 · King James Version

The Bible does not flatter willpower. It names desire, asks for watchfulness, and points to a Savior who knows the pressure from the inside. Escape is often ordinary: leave the room, tell a friend, open the passage, ask for help before the private story hardens.
