Bible answers
What does the Bible say about lust?
The Bible treats lust as desire aimed wrongly — coveting a person, making provision for the flesh, adultery of the heart. It is not the same as the marriage bed, which Hebrews says is to be honored. Scripture is direct and also merciful: flee, confess, walk by the Spirit, and pursue righteousness with people who call on the Lord. This page is not therapy, not an addiction clinic, and not a shame show. Lumin does not cure lust.
Lust in the Bible
- Exodus 20:17The tenth commandment: do not covet your neighbor’s wife or belongings — desire aimed at what is not yours.
- Matthew 5:27-28Jesus intensifies the seventh commandment: looking with lustful intent is adultery of the heart.
- Mark 7:20-23Defilement comes from within: evil thoughts, sexual immorality, and coveting are listed among what proceeds from the heart.
- James 1:14-15Each person is tempted when desire lures; desire conceives, gives birth to sin, and sin to death.
- Colossians 3:5Put to death sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness.
- 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5God’s will is sanctification: control your own body in holiness, not in the passion of lust.
- 1 Corinthians 6:18-20Flee sexual immorality; your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, bought with a price.
- 2 Timothy 2:22Flee youthful passions; pursue righteousness with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.
But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.Scripture’s pattern is honesty without spectacle. Job makes a covenant with his eyes. Paul says put on Christ and make no provision for the flesh; Peter says passions of the flesh wage war against the soul. The mind can be redirected — think on what is true, honorable, and pure — and the gospel still meets failure: if we confess our sins, he is faithful to forgive and cleanse. Flee is a real verb. It is often ordinary: leave the room, tell a trusted person, open the passage.
This is not a private program Lumin invented, and it is not medical advice. Compulsive patterns belong with the church and with skilled help a pastor or doctor can name. Cross the temptation and addiction pages if that is the language of your week. Healthy desire in marriage is not the target of these warnings; coveting and lustful intent are.
