What does the Bible say about lying?
The Bible calls lying a sin. God is the God of truth, the ninth commandment forbids false witness, and Proverbs says lying lips are detestable to him. Jesus calls the devil the father of lies, and Paul tells believers to put falsehood away because they belong to one another. Scripture also tells hard stories, such as Rahab hiding the spies, that Christians still debate. And it offers real forgiveness to anyone who confesses a lie and wants to live in the truth.
Bible verses about lying
- Exodus 20:16Do not testify falsely against your neighbor.
- Proverbs 12:22Lying lips are detestable to God; people who act faithfully are his delight.
- Proverbs 6:16-19A lying tongue and a false witness are among the things God hates.
- John 8:44The devil does not stand in the truth; he is a liar and the father of lies.
- Ephesians 4:25Put away falsehood and speak the truth to your neighbor, for we are members of one another.
- Colossians 3:9-10Stop lying to each other; you have put off the old self and put on the new.
- Psalm 15:1-2The one who may dwell with God speaks the truth from the heart.
- 1 John 1:9If we confess our sins, God is faithful and righteous to forgive them and make us clean.
Therefore, having put away falsehood, each of you must speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members of one another.Lies feel small because most of them are. We shade a story, pad an excuse, or say we are fine. Scripture takes them seriously anyway, because trust is how people live together, and God himself is truth. Paul’s reason for honesty is striking: we are members of one another. A lie treats a neighbor as someone to manage instead of someone to love.
The Bible also tells harder stories. Rahab lied to protect the spies, and the Hebrew midwives misled Pharaoh to save babies, and God blessed both women for their faith. Christians disagree about whether those lies were right or were forgiven failures inside faithful acts, and most of life is nowhere near those cases. The ordinary call is simpler: say what is true, kindly, and stop protecting yourself with words. If lying has become a habit, you can start again today. Confess it to God, make it right where you can, and practice telling the truth in small things first.

People also ask
- Is lying a sin?
- Yes. The ninth commandment forbids false witness (Exodus 20:16), Proverbs 12:22 says lying lips are detestable to God, and Colossians 3:9 tells believers to stop lying to each other. Lying is also forgivable: 1 John 1:9 promises forgiveness to anyone who confesses.
- Is a white lie a sin?
- Scripture does not make an exception for small or polite lies. Ephesians 4:25 grounds honesty in love: we are members of one another. You can be kind without being false, for example by saying less, choosing gentle words, or keeping a confidence.
- Why was Rahab blessed if she lied?
- Rahab hid Israel’s spies and misled the king’s men (Joshua 2). Hebrews 11:31 and James 2:25 praise her faith and her protection of the spies, not her words. Christians disagree about whether her lie was justified or a failure that God forgave inside a faithful act.
- How do I stop lying?
- Confess it to God (1 John 1:9), set things right with the people you misled, and practice telling the truth in small things. Notice what you lie to protect, such as your image, your comfort, or your fear, and bring that to God in prayer.
