Common questions

Plain answers.

How do I find a Bible verse when I only remember a few words?

Type the words you remember into the verse finder on this page. It looks for verses with those exact words in the Lumin Translation, and for verses whose meaning matches when you remember a different Bible’s wording, such as the King James or the NIV. Each result links to the verse in its chapter.

Why does the verse read differently from the words I typed?

English Bibles word the same verse in different ways. “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” (King James) and “I can do all this through him who gives me strength” (NIV) are both Philippians 4:13. The finder shows the verse in the Lumin Translation, a modern English Bible, so the wording may differ from the one you remember while the verse is the same.

Can I look up a verse by its reference?

Yes. Type a reference such as John 3:16, Psalm 23, or 1 Cor 13:4-7 and the finder shows the verse, with a link to read the whole chapter. Common abbreviations work.

What if the words are not in the Bible at all?

Some well-known lines are not Bible verses, such as “God helps those who help themselves” or “This too shall pass.” The finder says so, explains where the saying comes from, and shows what the Bible says instead. The Bible word checker can also count each word.

Can it find verses about a topic, like worry or grief?

It works best with words from the verse itself. For a topic, the Lumin topic pages gather the verses on it, such as what the Bible says about anxiety or grief, each with the reference and the full text. You can also ask Lumin a question and get an answer with the verses beside it.

Is the Bible verse finder free?

Yes. It is free, needs no account, and nothing you type is stored. It runs on the same index as the Lumin Bible word and verse checker.
