Mark 12

1And he began speaking to them in parables: a man planted a vineyard, fenced it around, dug a wine vat, built a tower, leased it to vinedressers, and went abroad.

2When the season came, he sent a servant to the farmers so he might receive from the farmers some of the vineyard's fruit.

3And they seized him, beat him, and sent him away empty-handed.

4Again he sent another servant to them, and they struck that one on the head and dishonored him.

5And he sent another, and they killed him as well, and many others, beating some and killing some.

6He still had one beloved son; he sent him to them last, saying, "They will respect my son."

7But those farmers said to one another, "This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours."

8And they took him, killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.

9What will the master of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the vinedressers, then give the vineyard to others.

10Haven't you even read this scripture: "The stone the builders rejected has become the head of the corner"?

11This came from the Lord, and it is marvelous in our eyes.

12They were seeking to seize him, but they feared the crowd, for they knew that he had spoken the parable against them. Leaving him, they went away.

13Then they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians to him to trap him in his words.

14They came and said to him, "Teacher, we know that you are truthful and care nothing for anyone, for you show no favoritism toward people but teach God's way in truth. Is it right to give tribute to Caesar, or not? Shall we give, or not?"

15But perceiving their hypocrisy, he said to them, "Why are you testing me? Bring me a denarius, so that I may see it."

16They brought it, and he said to them, "Whose image and inscription is this?" They said to him, "Caesar's."

17Jesus said to them, "Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God." And they marvelled greatly at him.

18And Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him and questioned him, saying,

19Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if anyone's brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, his brother should take that wife and raise up offspring for his brother.

20There were seven brothers. The first married a wife and died, leaving no offspring.

21And the second took her and died without leaving offspring, and the third likewise.

22And the seven left no offspring, and last of all the woman died too.

23In the resurrection, when they rise, of which of them will she be the wife? For the seven had her as a wife.

24Jesus said to them, "Do you not err for this reason, not knowing the scriptures nor the power of God?"

25For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.

26But concerning the dead, that they are raised—have you not read in the book of Moses, about the bush, how God said to him, "I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob"?

27He is not God of the dead, but of the living. You are greatly mistaken.

28And one of the scribes approached after hearing them dispute and seeing that he answered them well, then asked him, "Which is the first commandment of all?"

29Jesus answered, "The first is: 'Hear, Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.'"

30And you shall love the Lord your God with your entire heart, and with your entire soul, and with your entire mind, and with your entire strength.

31The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. No other commandment is greater than these.

32And the scribe said to him, "Well, teacher, truly you said that he is one, and there is no other except him."

33And to love him with one's whole heart, with one's whole understanding, and with one's whole strength, and to love one's neighbor as oneself, is greater than all the whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.

34When Jesus saw that he answered sensibly, he said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." And no one dared question him any longer.

35While teaching in the temple, Jesus responded, "How do the scribes say that Christ is David's son?"

36David himself said in the Holy Spirit, "The Lord said to my Lord, 'Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.'"

37David himself calls him Lord; how then is he his son? And the large crowd heard him gladly.

38In his teaching he said, “Watch out for the scribes who want to walk around in long robes and receive greetings in the marketplaces.”

39and the seats of honor in the synagogues, and the places of honor at the banquets,

40who devour the houses of widows and for show pray long prayers; these will receive greater judgment.

41And sitting across from the treasury, he observed how the crowd put money into the treasury. And many rich put in much.

42And a poor widow came and cast two mites, which is a farthing.

43He called his disciples to him and said to them, "Truly I say to you, this poor widow cast more than all those casting into the treasury."

44For they all gave from their abundance, but she from her poverty gave everything she had, her whole livelihood.
