Mark 5

1And they arrived at the far side of the sea, in the region of the Gerasenes.

2And when he came out of the boat, immediately a man with an unclean spirit met him from the tombs.

3who had a dwelling in the tombs, and no one could bind him any longer, not even with a chain.

4because he had often been bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been wrenched apart by him and the fetters crushed to pieces, and no one could subdue him.

5Night and day, in the tombs and mountains, he was crying out and cutting himself with stones.

6And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped him.

7And crying out with a loud voice, he said, "What do you have to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God not to torment me."

8For he said to him, "Come out of the man, unclean spirit!"

9And he asked him, “What is your name?” And he said to him, “My name is Legion, for we are many.”

10And he begged him earnestly that he would not send them out of the region.

11Now there was near the mountain a large herd of pigs feeding.

12And they begged him, saying, "Send us into the pigs, so that we may enter them."

13He permitted them, and the unclean spirits went out and entered the swine; the herd rushed down the cliff into the sea—about two thousand—and choked in the sea.

14Those who were feeding them fled and reported it in the city and countryside. They came to see what had happened.

15They came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man sitting clothed and in his right mind, the one who had the legion, and they were afraid.

16And those who had seen it told them how it happened to the demon-possessed man, and about the pigs.

17And they began pleading with him to depart from their borders.

18As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been demonized begged him that he might be with him.

19He did not allow him, but said to him, "Go home to your own people and tell them all that the Lord has done for you, and how he showed you mercy."

20He departed and began proclaiming in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled.

21And when Jesus had crossed over again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered around him, and he was beside the sea.

22And one of the synagogue rulers named Jairus came, and seeing him, he fell at his feet.

23And he begged him earnestly, saying, "My little daughter is at the point of death—come and put your hands on her, so that she may be healed and live."

24And he went with him, and a great crowd was following him, and they were pressing him.

25And a woman who had a flow of blood for twelve years,

26and had suffered many things from many physicians and spent everything she possessed, profiting nothing but rather growing worse,

27When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment.

28For she kept saying, "If I touch even his clothes, I will be healed."

29And immediately the source of her blood dried up, and she realized in her body that she was healed from the scourge.

30And immediately Jesus, perceiving in himself that the power had gone out from him, turned around in the crowd and said, "Who touched my clothes?"

31And his disciples said to him, "You see the crowd pressing you, and you say, 'Who touched me?'"

32And he looked around to see the one who had done this.

33But the woman, gripped by fear and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell prostrate before him and told him the whole truth.

34And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you; go in peace, and be whole from your plague.”

35While he was still speaking, some from the ruler of the synagogue came saying, "Your daughter died—why do you still trouble the teacher?"

36But Jesus, overhearing the message being spoken, said to the synagogue ruler, "Do not fear—only believe."

37And he let no one follow along with him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James.

38And they came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and he saw the uproar, many weeping and wailing.

39And when he entered, he said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead, but sleeps.”

40They laughed at him, but he put them all out, took the child's father and mother and those with him, and entered where the child was.

41And grasping the child's hand, he said to her, "Talitha kum," which being interpreted is, "Girl, I say to you, arise."

42Immediately the girl arose and began walking, for she was twelve years old, and they were immediately overcome with great amazement.

43And he sternly charged them that no one learn of this, and directed that something be given her to eat.
