Mark 2

1And when he entered Capernaum again after some days, it was heard that he is in the house.

2And many assembled so that there was no longer room, not even at the door, and he was speaking the word to them.

3And they came to him bringing a paralytic carried by four.

4And since they could not bring him to him because of the crowd, they uncovered the roof where he was, and after breaking it up, they let down the mat on which the paralytic lay.

5And Jesus, seeing their faith, said to the paralytic, "Son, your sins are forgiven."

6But some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts.

7Why does this man speak this way? He blasphemes. Who can forgive sins except God alone?

8And immediately Jesus perceived in his spirit that they were reasoning so within themselves, and he said to them, “Why do you reason these things in your hearts?”

9Which is easier, to say to the paralyzed man, “Your sins are forgiven,” or to say, “Get up, pick up your mat, and walk?”

10But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins, he said to the paralytic.

11I say to you, get up, pick up your mat, and go home.

12And he arose and at once picked up the mat and went out before them all, so that everyone was astonished and glorified God, saying, "We never saw the like."

13And he went out again beside the sea, and the whole crowd was coming to him, and he was teaching them.

14And passing by, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And arising, he followed him.

15And as he reclined in his house, many tax collectors and sinners reclined with Jesus and his disciples, for many were following him.

16And the scribes of the Pharisees, seeing him eat with sinners and tax collectors, said to his disciples, "Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?"

17And when Jesus heard, he said to them, "The healthy have no need of a physician, but the sick do; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners."

18John's disciples and the Pharisees were fasting, and they came and said to him, "Why do John's disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?"

19And Jesus said to them, "Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast."

20But days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days.

21No one sews a patch of new cloth onto an old garment; otherwise the new patch pulls away from the old, and the tear becomes worse.

22And no one puts new wine into old wineskins, else the wine bursts the skins, the wine perishes, and the skins too; but new wine into new wineskins.

23And it happened that on the Sabbath he passed through the grainfields, and his disciples began making a path by plucking the heads of grain.

24And the Pharisees said to him, "Look, why do they do on the Sabbath what is not permitted?"

25He said to them, "Haven't you ever read what David did when he faced a need and grew hungry—he and those with him?"

26How he entered the house of God when Abiathar was high priest, ate the bread of the Presence—which is not lawful to eat except for the priests—and gave to those who were with him.

27And he said to them, "The Sabbath came into being for man's sake, not man for the Sabbath."

28So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.
