Mark 15

1And immediately at daybreak the chief priests, with the elders and scribes and the whole council, took counsel, bound Jesus, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.

2And Pilate asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" He answered him, "You say."

3And the chief priests were accusing him of many things.

4Pilate asked him again, saying, "Do you answer nothing? See how many things they accuse you of."

5But Jesus answered nothing more, so that Pilate marveled.

6Now at the feast he would release one prisoner to them, whomever they requested.

7Now there was one called Barabbas, bound with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the insurrection.

8And the crowd went up and began asking him to do as he usually did for them.

9But Pilate replied to them, "Do you want me to release the King of the Jews for you?"

10For he knew that the chief priests had handed him over because of envy.

11But the chief priests incited the crowd so he would release Barabbas to them instead.

12Pilate answered them again, saying, "What then do you want me to do with the one you call the King of the Jews?"

13But they cried out again, "Crucify him!"

14Pilate said to them, “Why? What harm has he done?” But they cried out even louder, “Crucify him!”

15So Pilate, wanting to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas to them and handed Jesus over, having flogged him, so that he would be crucified.

16The soldiers led him inside the courtyard, which is the Praetorium, and called together the whole cohort.

17And they dressed him in purple, and after weaving a crown of thorns, they placed it on him.

18And they began greeting him, "Hail, king of the Jews!"

19And they beat his head with a reed and spat on him, and bowing their knees worshiped him.

20When they had mocked him, they stripped the purple robe from him and dressed him in his own clothes. They led him out to crucify him.

21They compelled a certain Simon, a Cyrenian passing by on his way from the countryside—the father of Alexander and Rufus—to carry his cross.

22And they brought him to Golgotha, which is interpreted Place of a Skull.

23And they gave him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not receive it.

24And they crucified him and divided his garments, casting a lot upon them, what each should take.

25It was the third hour when they crucified him.

26And the superscription of his accusation was inscribed: "The King of the Jews."

27And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left.

29And those passing by blasphemed him, shaking their heads and saying, "Aha! You who destroy the temple and build it in three days,"

30Save yourself by coming down from the cross!

31Likewise the chief priests also, mocking one another with the scribes, said, "He saved others; he cannot save himself."

32Let Christ, the King of Israel, come down from the cross now, so that we may see and believe. And those crucified with him reviled him.

33And when the sixth hour came, darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour.

34And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?" which being interpreted is "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

35And some of the bystanders, hearing this, said, "Look, he is calling Elijah."

36Someone ran, filled a sponge with vinegar, put it on a reed, and offered him a drink, saying, "Leave him alone! Let's see if Elijah comes to take him down."

37But Jesus let out a loud cry and breathed his last.

38And the temple veil was torn in two from top to bottom.

39Seeing how he breathed his last, the centurion standing opposite him said, "Truly this man was God's Son."

40There were also women watching from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and Joses, and Salome.

41who followed and served him when he was in Galilee, and many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem.

42And when evening had already come, since it was preparation day—that is, the day before the sabbath—

43Joseph from Arimathea, an honorable councilor who himself awaited God's kingdom, came, dared to go in to Pilate, and asked for Jesus' body.

44Pilate was amazed whether he was already dead, and summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he had died long ago.

45And when he learned from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.

46And he bought a linen cloth, took him down, wrapped him in the linen, laid him in a tomb hewn out of rock, and rolled a stone against the tomb's door.

47Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses watched where he had been laid.
