Mark 14

1Now it was two days before the Passover and unleavened bread, and the chief priests and scribes were seeking how they might seize him by deceit and kill him.

2For they said, "Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar from the people."

3While he was in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he reclined at the table, a woman came carrying an alabaster jar of very precious pure nard ointment; she broke the jar and poured it on his head.

4But some were indignant among themselves, "Why has this waste of the ointment occurred?"

5For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor. And they were indignant with her.

6But Jesus said, "Let her be. Why bring her trouble? She performed a good deed for me."

7For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you desire you can do good to them, but you do not always have me.

8She did what she could. She anointed my body beforehand for burial.

9Amen, I say to you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the whole world, what she did will also be spoken of for a memorial of her.

10And Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went to the chief priests to betray him to them.

11When they heard, they rejoiced and promised him silver. And he sought how he might opportunely betray him.

12And on the first day of unleavened bread, when they sacrificed the Passover, his disciples asked him, "Where do you want us to go and prepare so you may eat the Passover?"

13And he sent two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you; follow him.”

14And wherever he enters, tell the master of the house, "The Teacher says, 'Where is my guest room, where I will eat the Passover with my disciples?'"

15And he himself will show you a large upper room already furnished and ready, and there prepare for us.

16The disciples left, entered the city, found it as he had said to them, and prepared the Passover.

17And when evening came, he came with the twelve.

18And as they reclined and ate, Jesus said, "Amen, I tell you, one of you will betray me—the one who eats with me."

19They began to grieve and say to him one by one, "Not I?"

20But he said to them, “One of the twelve—the one who dips with me into the dish.”

21For the Son of Man indeed goes as it is written concerning him, but woe to that man through whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would be better for that man if he had not been born.

22While they were eating, he took bread, blessed it, broke it, gave it to them, and said, "Take; this is my body."

23And after taking a cup and giving thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.

24And he said to them, "This is my blood of the covenant, poured out for many."

25Amen, I tell you, I will no longer drink from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.

26And after singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

27Jesus said to them, "All of you will stumble, for it is written: 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.'"

28But after I am raised, I will go before you into Galilee.

29But Peter said to him, "Even if all stumble, I will not."

30And Jesus said to him, "Amen, I say to you that today, this very night, before a rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times."

31But he spoke even more insistently, "Even if it is necessary for me to die with you, I will never deny you." And they all said likewise.

32And they came to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, "Sit here while I pray."

33He took Peter, James, and John with him and began to be terrified and distressed.

34And he said to them, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow, even to death. Stay here and keep watch."

35He went ahead a little, fell on the ground, and prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass from him.

36And he said, "Abba, Father, everything is possible for you—remove this cup from me. But not what I desire, but what you desire."

37He came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, "Simon, are you asleep? Weren't you able to stay awake one hour?"

38Keep watch and pray, so that you do not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

39Again he departed and prayed, saying the same words.

40Again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were weighed down, and they did not know what to answer him.

41He came the third time and said to them, "Sleep on and rest. Enough. The hour has come. See, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners."

42Get up, let's go. See, the one betraying me has come near.

43And immediately, while he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, arrived with a crowd carrying swords and clubs from the chief priests, scribes, and elders.

44Now the one betraying him had given them a signal, saying, "Whomever I kiss, he is the one; seize him and lead him away securely."

45And when he arrived, he immediately approached him and said, "Rabbi!" and kissed him.

46Then they laid hands on him and seized him.

47But one of those standing by drew his sword, struck the high priest's servant, and cut off his ear.

48And Jesus answered them, “As against a robber, have you come out with swords and clubs to seize me?”

49Every day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me. But this is so that the scriptures might be fulfilled.

50And they all deserted him and fled.

51And a certain young man was following him, wrapped in a linen cloth over his naked body, and they seized him.

52But forsaking the linen cloth, he fled naked.

53They led Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, elders, and scribes assembled.

54And Peter followed him from afar, even inside the high priest's courtyard, where he sat with the officers and warmed himself by the fire.

55The chief priests and the entire council sought testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but found none.

56For many testified falsely against him, but their testimonies did not agree.

57And some stood up and testified falsely against him, saying,

58We heard him say, "I will destroy this temple made by hands, and in three days build another not made by hands."

59But even so their testimony did not agree.

60And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, "Do you not answer anything? What do these testify against you?"

61But he remained silent and made no reply. Again the high priest questioned him and said to him, "Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?"

62Jesus said, "I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming with the clouds of heaven."

63The high priest tore his clothes and said, "What further need do we have of witnesses?"

64"You have heard the blasphemy. What seems to you?" And they all condemned him as deserving of death.

65Some began spitting on him, covering his face, striking him, and saying to him, “Prophesy!” The servants slapped him.

66And while Peter was down in the courtyard, one of the high priest's servant girls came.

67And seeing Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, "You also were with Jesus the Nazarene."

68But he denied, saying, "I neither know nor understand what you say." He went out into the porch, and a rooster crowed.

69And the servant girl saw him and began saying again to those standing by, "This one is from their group."

70He denied it again, but after a short time those standing nearby said to Peter once more, "You certainly are one of them, for you are Galilean, and your speech agrees."

71But he began to curse and swear, "I do not know this man you speak of."

72Immediately the rooster crowed a second time. Peter remembered the saying, as Jesus had told him, “Before a rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” When he considered that, he wept.
